Assessment of and Accountability for Student Learning: In Search of a Win-Win Solution

Developing institutional capacities for student learning outcomes assessment and being accountable to external constituents for the quality of student learning are both challenging endeavors.  Recent increases in demands for accountability, including a notable press for standardized testing, have added significantly to the challenge.  Faculty are understandably skeptical about external mandates to reduce teaching and learning to a few simple measures, especially when new demands are placed upon them to develop program assessments with little reward and incentive.  Participants in this workshop will explore the forces and barriers that surround student learning outcomes assessment and will seek to identify constructive approaches to infusing a culture of evidence into their institutions while meeting growing external demands for accountability.
