What We Do

The Arts and Sciences Advising Center staff primarily serves freshmen and unclassified students in the college. They are also a resource for other students as well as faculty in the college. The Center is staffed by three full-time professional advisers and a full-time secretary. During peak times they are assisted by a team of faculty and peer advisers.

In the Arts and Sciences Advising Center, students have direct access to advisers who take an interest in the students' programs and progress, supply them with information, and guide them toward getting the most out of their university experience. In carrying out these objectives, advisers:

  • are available to listen to student concerns and questions.
  • maintain confidentiality.
  • provide accurate information about university regulations, policies, and procedures.
  • provide guidance in students' choice of classes.
  • refer students to appropriate campus resources as needed.
  • assist students in monitoring degree progress and in keeping their academic records accurate.

The advising process varies, depending on students' year in school and whether students have declared a major. Most arts and sciences freshmen are advised by the college Advising Center. However, freshmen who plan to major in art, biology, chemistry, communications studies, journalism, mathematics, music, physics or theatre are referred to departmental faculty advisers.

To help ensure graduation on a timely basis, Arts and Sciences students must declare a major by the time they have completed 36 credits. All sophomores and upperclassmen with declared majors are advised by faculty members in the student's major department. Undeclared sophomores with fewer than 36 credits are advised in the Advising Center.

Transfer students with 28 credits or more and a declared major are advised in the department of their major. Others are advised in the college Advising Center, except as noted above. New transfer students are encouraged to visit with Advising Center staff to review the evaluation of their transfer credits and determine how these credits may be used to meet degree requirements.
