ELIGIBILITY FOR SERVICES

NMSU employees, their dependents over age 2 and retirees of NMSU, may elect to see a provider at the UHC for their acute health care needs. Employees may use the UHC services without giving up the PCP they have selected.

Diagnostic testing, imaging and specialty referrals ordered by UHC providers will be recognized by the health plan and payable according to policy benefits.

Full and part-time employees not on the NMSU health plan can use the UHC by paying an office visit fee.

EMERGENCY/URGENT CARE

The UHC is not equipped or staffed to provide care for emergencies. It can provide only limited care for some urgent conditions during regular hours of operation. (A medical emergency is defined as"a life or limb threatening condition"; an urgent medical need is typically defined as "less severe than an emergency, but requiring care more quickly than elective care." )

Emergencies: Call the Campus Police at 911 or go directly to a local hospital emergency room for life or limb threatening conditions, regardless of when the emergency occurs. An Emergency Call Box is located on the exterior of the UHC for those needing care after operational hours.

Urgent Care (During Regular Operating Hours): Call the UHC at 646-6600. Ask for a nurse to assist in deciding what facility may be appropriate for your care.

Employees not on the NMSU health plan will pay a $30 office visit to the UHC.

Charges are assessed for the following EHC provided services:

In-house lab testing

In-house prescription medications & some immunizations

Medical supplies & equipment

Diagnostic procedures & treatment

Payments will be accepted by cash, check, credit card, or NMSU Money$Card, and are due at the time services are rendered. All charges associated with referrals outside testing, procedures and treatment become the responsibility of the patient.

PHARMACY

UHC has a drug room that stocks limited varieties of prescription medications and Over-the-Counter products. Our inventory includes several common antibiotics, pain medications, topical preparations and cold remedies. After consulting one of our providers, you may pick up your prescription at the same time if it is available in our drug room. For more information, please call 646-6600.

WORK RELATED INJURIES

If you are injured at work, you do not need to be on the NMSU health care plan in order to receive medical care at the UHC. In fact, NMSU requires that an injured employee see a UHC provider first for all medical care and for any specialist referrals for a work related injury.

EXCEPTIONS ARE:

A need for immediate hospital emergency care

A serious injury that occurs after UHC clinic hours

An injury that occurs outside the Las Cruces area

If any of the above work related situations occur, David Carbajal, the NMSU Workers' Comp Coordinator (646-7375) and the UHC (646-6600) should be contacted within 24 hours in order to coordinate all follow-up medical care.
