Economic Development Department officials have proposed a law to the Chihuahua Legislature that would prevent new administrations from abandoning economic development programs such as "21st Century Chihuahua", which have been developed as long term strategic plans. Enrique Terrazas Torres, Director of the State Economic Development Department, announced that the proposal is being considered for introduction by August and would not preclude modifications in subsequent administrations, but would prevent plans and economic development models from being abandoned. The proposed law would be submitted to the Legislature for enactment in October.
"21st Century Chihuahua" is a coordinated effort by business people, workers and the education system together with city, state and federal governments to address economic development needs of the state as the next century approaches. The purpose of the program is to develop the state's economy to a level that is competitive on an international scale and results in tangible benefits for the state's residents through the creation of better paying jobs.
