The residency course is an option for master degree students who are interested in undertaking research in cooperation with government or private sector professionals. It has been specifically created to meet the needs of a student who has little professional experience or the working professional who can use a degree for job advancement.
It should be recognized that selecting this option to replace the thesis sets the MAG in the terminal degree category. The terminal degree greatly inhibits the ability of a student to pursue advanced graduate work such as that required to complete a Ph.D. (A student who selects the thesis option may also take the residency, but the thesis is the course which fulfills the exit requirement for the degree.).
The residency course does not allow a student to gain retroactive credit for work completed as part of a regular job assignment or in previous undergraduate or graduate work. Any work undertaken for credit must be authorized by the NMSU Geography program prior to the start of the project.
Prerequisites
The following minimum requirements must be met before a student is allowed to enroll in Geography 596: Residency: 1) completion of 18 hours in the graduate program with a grade of B or better; 2) completion of all core courses with a grade of B or better and 3) one year's residence at NMSU.
The NMSU Geography Department would like to hear from you. We welcome your comments
