Global music piracy results in an estimated $12.5 billion in economic losses every year. These losses hurt the music community by causing thousands of layoffs and making it more difficult for new artists to get signed. In piracy, age doesn’t matter. In 2004, twelve year old Brianna Lahara found out the hard way when the Record Industry Association of America (RIAA) sued her, claiming she offered more than 1,000 songs on the internet using Kazaa file-sharing. Lahara’s mother agreed to settle out of court and paid a fine of $2,000, equaling about $2 per song. Lahara’s case was just the first of 260 cases pending in 2004. |
