- City Museums located in the Las Cruces
historic downtown area include the Branigan Cultural Center and the
new Las Cruces Museum of Fine Arts and Culture. The museums
feature changing exhibits of art, culture, regional history, furniture and
artifacts from the permanent collection, special events, creative arts and dance
classes for all ages. Nearby are the turn-of-the-century Log Cabin Museum
and Women's Improvement Association building, home of the Rio
Grand Artes workshops. Visit the Gift Shop for art and unique gifts

Fort Selden State Monument
- Fort Selden was established in
1865 to protect settlers from outlaws and Apache Indians. The post housed one
company of infantry and cavalry including the "Buffalo Soldiers."
General Douglas MacArthur, of World War II fame, spent several years of his
childhood at the outpost in the 1880s. Fort Selden is located 13 miles north of
Las Cruces at Exit
19 off I-25 and has an interpretive trail and exhibits.

The Las Cruces Museum of Natural History
Part of the City Museum system, offers natural history and science exhibits, lectures,
field trips, guided tours of the museum, astronomy tours of the night sky,
hands-on activities for children, educational classes and outreach programs for
the community, summer camps for children, and public computer workstations with
interactive software and free internet access. On permanent display are live
animals and plants of the Chihuahuan Desert, as well as a few unique species

providing detailed historical data of Maria Martinez's family and the San
Ildefonso pottery heritage. They specialize in historical content of the
lesser-known family members who were excellent potters but haven't received much

New Mexico Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum - The New Mexico
Farm and Ranch Heritage Museum tells the 3,000 year story of agriculture in New
Mexico--the people, crops, animals, water, soil and technology. The Museum, a
division of the Office of Cultural Affairs, features a working farm and ranch
complete with live animals; more than 25,000 square feet of indoor display
space for permanent and changing exhibitions; a Farmer's Market; a restaurant
and store; indoor and outdoor theaters; live demonstrations; classes and special
events.

Space Murals, Inc. Museum and Gift Shop
- Space Murals,
Inc. Museum and Gift Shop is located behind a huge water tank painted with
images from the X-15 to the Challenger accident. Inside the museum is an
Astronaut Gallery, Air & Space Artifacts including 2,500 pictures, a
space shuttle replica, model
airplanes, a Space Station Freedom, a kids corner, and a small library of space
related information. The Gift Shop has an extensive selection of space
related items.

University Art Gallery, New Mexico State University - The
University Art Gallery is the largest contemporary art gallery in south central
New Mexico. The UAG presents 8-10 exhibitions annually of contemporary and
historical art. The UAG permanent collection of over 2,600 objects includes
prints, photographs and over 1,700 Mexican retablos. The UAG offers a vigorous
educational program including school tours, lectures, workshops, symposia,
openings and docent training.

White Sands Missile Range Museum
See the origin of
America's missile and space activity, the ushering in of the nuclear age, and
the great accomplishments of Dr. Werner Von Braun and Dr. Clyde Tombaugh in
America's early rocket program. Walk through Missile Park among weapons that won
the cold war and Operation Desert Storm. Observe the history of the Tularosa
Basin from the early Indians to the establishment of the world's largest missile
range.
