Task
Address specific barriers to New Mexico State University’s (NMSU) engineering students while engaging the broader issues of engineering education presented by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET), the National Science Foundation, and others.

Method
Implement a variety of sustainable strategies and activities selected for their potential to effect long-term institutional change. These activities will include both student support and faculty development resulting in increased recruitment, retention, and progression of engineering students – including those students historically underrepresented in the engineering disciplines.

Goals:

  • Establish integrated learning communities for freshmen engineering students emphasizing
    • written and oral communication skills; teaming skills
    • undergraduate research and engineering design
    • processes and skills of academic/scientific inquiry
  • Provide faculty development and training including new pedagogical approaches incorporating writing-to-learn techniques.
  • Develop a responsive assessment methodology.
  • Develop a replicable model for engineering educators.
  • Graduate students with cross-disciplinary skills and abilities including proficiency in applying successful thinking strategies and processes.
  • Contribute to the research on learning theory and engineering education.
