- 1st Saturday of July
- Chloride Ghost Town - Grand
Opening of the MONTE CRISTO GIFT SHOP & GALLERY
Special event from 10am to 4pm. Visit
with artists from the local area and listen to music and cowboy
poetry, as Chloride celebrates the opening of yet another historic
building. While there, plan to visit the Pioneer Store Museum,
built in 1880, and closed after the silver boom with all the
furnishings, merchandise, and records left inside. Now it's a
fascinating and unique collection of life in the days of silver
mining. Take the self-guided walk down Wall Street and see some
great original buildings and the "hanging tree." Stay
overnight in the first building in Chloride, or in the RV park.
Located near the Gila Wilderness, just 42 miles northwest of
Truth or Consequences via Interstate 25 and N.M. 52. Open 7 days
a week, 9am to 4pm. For more information, please contact edmund@zianet.com or call.

- Night Star Party and Bat
Flight Breakfast at Carlsbad Caverns
Activities will begin
on Friday with the evenings Bat Flight program, where visitors
watch as an estimated 300,000 Mexican free-tailed bats exit Carlsbad
Cavern in search of their favorite mealinsects! We
hope visitors will attend the Bat Flight program on Friday night,
stay up for the star party, have a good breakfast and watch the
bats fly back into the cave! said breakfast coordinator
Avelina Childress. We can have over a thousand people watching
the bats fly out of the cave each evening, but very few people
experience the in-flight. The Bat Flight Breakfast began
in the late 1950s as a way to encourage visitors to see the bats
morning return flight. Before entering the cave in the morning,
the bats circle several hundred feet overhead and then dive in
clusters into the cave entrance. Unlike the shorter nighttime
exodus out of the cave when the bats spiral up and leave the
cave, the sunrise return to the cave normally spans several hours.
Outdoor breakfast at Carlsbad Caverns from 5-7am. For more detailed
information and breakfast menu, visit the Carlsbad
Caverns Web site.
