Exceptional hunting and fishing throughout the lakes and forests of Catron County bring in sportsmen year-round.

Ranching, recreation, mining and timber. These are all words describing the essence of Catron County. With beautiful lakes for year-round fishing and situated within three national forests (Gila, Cibola and Apache), Catron is a mecca for outdoor opportunities as sportsmen come for the fine fishing and good elk hunting. Home of the legendary, self-appointed Sheriff Elfego Baca, Catron County is strong in Mexican-American history.

Named after a famous New Mexico lawyer and political leader, Thomas B. Catron, Catron County is the largest county, by area, in New Mexico, (at almost 7,000 square miles) but with a population of less than 3,500 in the whole county. Special events, such as the Pie Town Festival, change that number dramatically, several times a year.

The REDTT County Tourism Council (CTC) of Catron County meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Meeting location changes from month to month. For additional information, to become a member and get involved in tourism in Catron County, contact the REDTT director at redtt@nmsu.edu or call (505) 646-8009.
