Guided FAM Tour to
Sueños Encantados B&B and Cuba, N.M.

Pre-conference FAM Tour for:

REDTT's 2006
Rural Tourism Conference

Monday & Tuesday, April 24-25
Best Western Rio Rancho Inn and Conference Center
Rio Rancho, N.M.

Cuba, N.M., and the area surrounding, is known for its wildlife, beautiful views and interesting history. Native Americans have occupied the area for hundreds of years. In the 1700s, Spanish ranchers and farmers settled the area. Today, many large ranches and farms surround Cuba raising cattle, sheep, and goats, while also offering some premier elk and deer hunting.

On Sunday, April 23, there was a guided FAM tour to the San Pablo and Cuba area. Time was spent exploring the area prior to the REDTT conference. The following stops were made:

  • Sueños Encantados Bed and Breakfast at Rancho at San Pablo de Garcias, located between Cuba and La Ventana. Participants were treated to:
    • Wine Tasting from Zapata Winery - Rudy Duran’s delicious nopal, white and red grape wines.
    • Luncheon - with Vi and Phyllis of Sueños Encantados Bed and Breakfast. They served a homemade traditional Mexican luncheon complete with tacos, chicken enchiladas with red sauce, calabasitas (squash, corn, & onion), refried beans and, of course, homemade tortillas.
    • A grounds tour of the area which included: the original San Pablo Military Fort; the homestead of the Cebada family, dating back to the early 1800s; and spectacular scenery.
  • Then the group left for the historic village of Cuba. They stopped at:
    • El Bruno’s Restaurante y Cantina for Flan in one of the finest Mexican restaurants in the Southwest.
    • They browsed the unique gift shop, and art displayed throughout the restaurant. Women’s fashions by Double D Ranch of Texas are sold in the gift shop.
    • Took a tour of local Cuba artisans - including Sara’s Mudwasp Sculpture site and more.
