The following pages outline the procedure for requesting funding through various outlets available to Geological Science majors.

·        You must go through the Earth Sciences Graduate Students (ESGS), our graduate geology club, in order to receive funding from the Graduate Student Council (GSC) (only available to graduate students).  Funding is also available through Sigma Gamma Epsilon (S.G.E.), the NMSU Geology Club and the Arts and Science Council (open to both graduate and undergraduates).  All Arts and Science Council Funding must be initiated through S.G.E. or the NMSU Geology Club.  Participation in one or all of mentioned above clubs is necessary for requesting funding.

·        There will be financial awareness meetings before conferences such as GSA and AAPG, which you must attend if you are requesting funds.

·        It is only possible to receive half of the money you request from the combined resources of the Graduate Student Council (GSC), Arts and Science Council, and ASNMSU. The other money must come from other sources.

·        The easiest way to receive funds for graduate students is from the GSC or ASNMSU is by presenting at a conference. However, you can receive funding through ASNMSU if you are only attending a conference and not presenting, and it may be possible to procure funding through the GSC if you are attending a short course.   The Arts and Science council releases funding with more stringent requirements and is the required route for undergraduates.

·        Graduate Students ONLY:

o       Once ESGS has approved your request, you must go to the Graduate Student Council to request funding (see attached sheet).  If they are able to fund your entire request you do not have to request funding from ASNMSU.

o       The only time you have to request funding from ASNMSU is when the GSC has given ESGS its maximum amount for the year.

·        For Graduate and Undergraduate Students

o       Once S.G.E. or the NMSU Geology Club has approved your request, you must go to the Arts & Science Council to request funding.  If the council is unable to fund your request then you may request funding through ASNMSU.

o       Because of the stringent community service requirements of the Arts and Science Council it may be necessary to request funds from ASNMSU even when the council has funds to release.  See an officer of S.G.E. of the NMSU Geology Club for assistance in processing your funding request.
