 National SHPE History

SHPE is a national non-profit organization that was founded in 1974 in Los Angeles, California by a group of engineers employed by the city. Their objective was to form a national organization o f professional engineers to serve as role models for the Hispanic community. The SHPE network would quickly grow to encompass the Hispanic community on both a national level and international level. The mission of SHPE is to be the source for quality Hispanic engineers and technical talent.

 SHPE Chapter at NMSU

The NMSU student SHPE chapter was chartered in 1978. It was one of the first student chapter in the nation. SHPE is open to all students at our campus and is devoted to the professional development and retention of Hispanic engineering students.

SHPE's mission is to promote and support New Mexico State's Hispanic students aspiring towards excellence in professional technical fields to achieve educational excellence, economic opputunity, and social equality. It is with this mission in mind that we have developed our organizational goals and created useful working relationships from which anyone can benefit.

Throughout the year our chapter participates in community service events, organizes the regional ScienceBowl competition for high school students, attends conferences, and competes in engineering and academic competition.
