School of Social Work Needs and Endowed Funds
Challenge: "anything that calls for special effort". In higher education today, fundraising for an institution and its programs is often a challenge. One of the difficulties of a public institution is that people often believe that their tax money and tuition covers the whole cost of giving people an education. While important sources of support, taxes and tuition only cover a portion of running an educational program. Other sources of support come from contracts and grants and through the solicitation of private funds. Private funds are often placed into an endowment so that they can provide ongoing support that is funded from the annual interest earned on the endowed principal. Most often these monies are used by a program to fund student scholarships or are earmarked for other specific purposes. At the NMSU School of Social Work we currently have three endowed funds. These funds are:
  • Social Work Scholarship Fund - a current use general fund is designated for social work scholarships to be given at the discretion of the director.

  • Rose Praisner Scholarship Endowment - a fund endowed in 1989 in memory of Dr. Rose Praisner through gifts from her family and friends. This fund is to provide scholarships for social work students.

  • Robert Jay Titus Social Work Literature Endowment - a fund endowed in 2001 by the family members and friends of professional social worker Robert J. Titus. This fund is to provide funding for the purchase of library materials on child abuse, violence in the family, adolescent counseling and family counseling.
The "challenge" to the faculty, staff, students and alumni of the NMSU School of Social Work is to now work to make these endowments grow and to fund new ones. As the director of the School of Social Work I am challenging you to contribute to one or more of these funds. With your contribution you will be helping students now and in the future be assured of financial support and the use of "research quality" library holdings. If you are willing to accept this challenge, please make your check contribution to the New Mexico State University Foundation. Please indicate which of the above funds you wish to have your contribution applied to.

Thank you! If you wish to make a special contribution or to establish your own endowed fund, please contact the Director of the School of Social Work directly. Further information on giving to the school and NMSU can be found at both the NMSU Office of University Advancement and through the College of Health and Social Services Development Office.
