This renewable energy project was funded by the 2005 Clean Energy Grant by the State of New Mexico's Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department (EMNRD), the U.S. Department of Energy's State Energy Program and NMSU's Southwest Technology Development Institute (SWTDI). 

The U.S. Department of Energy's State Energy Program (SEP) provides grants (SEP Projects in New Mexico) to states and directs funding to state energy offices from technology programs in the Department of Energy's Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy. States use grants to address their energy priorities and program funding to adopt emerging renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies.

This 18 kW photovoltaic parking system is generating 15-20% of all electricity used by the Student Health Center building.  This photovoltaic system will annually eliminate the emission of over 111 lbs of nitrogen oxides, 77 lbs of sulphur dioxide and 52,542 lbs of carbon dioxide.  PV avoids the use of water generating electricity and assists in meeting New Mexico’s 10% Renewable Energy goal.
