Metro Division Traffic Engineering
Minnesota Department of Transportation
January 1996

The Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT) conducted a two-month study of the performance of Autoscope in controlling the signal at the intersection of Trunk Highway 65 and 53rd Avenue North in the City of Columbia Heights. This study was a continuation of a previous study conducted in 1993. The objectives of this study were: 1) to determine whether Autoscope can accurately detect traffic and control all the phases of the signal during light traffic conditions; 2) to compare Autoscope's reliability, maintenance, and cost with those of inductive loops; and 3) to determine the performance of Autoscope under sever weather conditions. Data was collected using video surveillance and manual spot checks. The study concluded in January 1995.
