By the time you receive this Panorama we will have started a new semester. The freshmen lines will be winding their way through campus and students will be eating campus food—the great cuisine we all remember!

In July, 150 freshmen came to Chile Camp, New Mexico State’s fun orientation program. They were told about traditions on campus, went on a scavenger hunt, and heard from students and alumni about how it was way back when we were in school. The alumni panel was made up of Ermelinda Quintela ’86 ’89 ’94, Steve Boudreau ’80, Bill Connor ’85 ’00, Vince Boudreau ’54 and Joe Creed ’59 ’86. What a great group! They fielded questions about athletics, famous Aggies and what the Alumni Association does.

You can continue to expect wonderful things from this group. Where Steve left off, Erma will pick up.

Goals and Accomplishments

In our last issue I briefly mentioned our goals. I would like to update you on a great year for New Mexico State in general. The Alumni Association had some wonderful accomplishments, too. A few highlights:

Goal: 50 Chapters chartered by August 4, 2002. Accomplished: All 50!

Goal: 4,800 dues-paying members in the Association. Accomplished: 4,669 dues-paying members.

Goal: Increase our standing graduate programs to all branch campuses. Accomplished: Three of four on board. Grants will be ready to participate in 2003.

Ohio

Jon Wheeler not only found a place for the Aggie get-together in Ohio—he also chartered the Ohio chapter. Jon and several Aggies from Ohio andIndiana met for hamburgers and green chile on June 14. The group, while small, is ready to have gatherings and is looking for chances to meet other Aggies in the area. I bet if we keep sending chile, the crowd will grow. The chile was sent by the College of Agriculture and Home Economics.

Silver City Chapter Chartered

At the time of writing we had scheduled the following events. Unfortunately, we will have to report on them in the next issue due to printing deadlines.

July 30—Senior Send-Off in Silver City Alumni in Silver City, Hal Hopson and Harold Bray, helped organize not only our new chapter but a hamburger fry for Silver City grads headed to NMSU.

August 3—Ice Cream Social in Rio Arriba County In conjunction with the Rio Arriba County Fair, Roberta Rios ’73, County Extension Agent, again made arrangements for our second annual ice cream social for alumni friends.

Mexican Chapter Chartered

August 3—Chihuahua, Mexico An update will follow in the next issue.

Philadelphia Chapter Chartered

Aggies from the Philadelphia and southern New Jersey areas gathered at the home of Arnold ’69 and Lynne Feldman in Doylestown on June 8, 2002. The weather was perfect and the Feldmans’ beautiful back yard and pool area made for a perfect setting to formally charter the Philadelphia area chapter of the Aggie Alumni Association. A great time was had by all, reminiscing, visiting and poring over old yearbooks. The cans of green chile that we provided whetted appetites, and as the event concluded there was talk of an enchilada dinner for chile-deprived Aggies in the area. Our thanks to Arnie and Lynne Feldman for their hospitality, and we look forward to future events with this great group of Aggies.

New Mexico State University’s own Maestro Lonnie Klein heads to Northern Italy next year for his European debut. On May 26, 2003, he will conduct the Milano Classical Chamber Orchestra, a program that will also feature acclaimed soloist James Houlik performing the world premiere of a concerto for tenor saxophone. Houlik was a popular guest artist with the Las Cruces Symphony Orchestra in 2001.

The Las Cruces Symphony Association is sponsoring a 13-day trip to see the maestro in Milan and then tour the serene beauty of northern Italy. Space is limited to 40 people. Details are available from Wanda Mattiace at Adventure Travel, 1-800-846-6061 or 505-521-1400.
