New Mexican cuisine draws San Diego Aggies together
Once again good New Mexican cuisine was the draw for Aggies on Feb. 9 in San Diego. More than 60 Aggies in the San Diego area came out to join Chapter President Dave Humphry ’87 at Luminarias. Dave and his wife, Roxanne, were the heroes of the day for finding such a terrific place to hold an Aggie event. Even the NMSU contingent (which included Alumni Association President Shari Jones ’90, Immediate Past President Ermelinda Quintela ’86, Senior Gifts Officer Jill Grammer, Ron Gurley from the College of Agriculture and Home Economics, and Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Monica Martinez) chowed down on all the great food.
Dave would like to have a chile roast this fall coupled with a chile cook-off, so be on the lookout for more information on that.
Arizona Aggies enjoy pre-game BBQ
Karsten Golf Course in Tempe, Ariz., was the place to be for Arizona Aggies on May 4. Phoenix Chapter President Anthony Chavez ’90 helped organize a barbecue prior to the Aggies vs. ASU Sun Devils baseball game. Luckily for us the food and company were better than the game (the Aggies lost). Thanks to Anthony and Heather Johnson ’02 for another great event.
Athletic Director Brian Faison gave a preview of Aggie sports for the coming year. This led Anthony to think about the possibility of chartering a bus to Las Cruces for the Aggie vs. Lobo football game in September.
Santa Fe alumni celebrate Cinco de Mayo
“Almost Cinco de Mayo” was celebrated at the home of Elena Moreno-Sparks ’94 on Friday, May 7. This event kicked off a series of summer events in the northern part of the state. Aggies enjoyed meeting one another and sharing stories about their days at NMSU with John Rodke, who will begin at NMSU this fall. John is the son of Rusty Rodke ’82.
Aggies-on-the-Hill get together
Nearly 20 Aggies who work at Los Alamos National Laboratory met May 12 at a luncheon hosted by Tim Martinez ’82. The LANL Aggies shared their thoughts on establishing a niche chapter for LANL employees. With more than 400 NMSU graduates working at LANL and 80 student interns, the chapter set as their goals:
Networking with one another both professionally and socially.
- Helping other NMSU alumni who are eager to learn about
LANL.
- Assisting NMSU students who are seeking internship
opportunities.
- High school outreach throughout northern New Mexico.
The group also planned a summer barbecue for student interns
at LANL in August.
