For the Archuleta family of Clayton, New Mexico, a connection to NMSU began in 1960 when Ed Archuleta enrolled as a civil engineering student. And judging from the school's popularity with the family, it's probably a long way from ending.
Archuleta was attracted to NMSU because of the opportunity to be one of the first students to participate in a new satellite tracking co-op program sponsored by the Navy. He alternated between spending semesters on campus and serving as a technician in locations around the world, including Japan, Europe, Greenland, and the Naval Observatory in Washington, D.C.
"It was an exciting way for me to get my education," Archuleta says. In addition to earning his undergraduate degree in 1966, Archuleta earned a master's degree in water resource management in 1968.
After watching his brother's success at NMSU, younger brother Adelmo "Del" Archuleta also decided to enroll. He too chose civil engineering, with a specialization in water systems. He received a bachelor's degree in 1973 and a master's degree in 1976.
Both brothers have gone on to excel in their field. Ed Archuleta is now general manager of El Paso Water Utilities and Del Archuleta is president of Molzen-Corbin and Associates in Albuquerque, a civil engineering firm that specializes in water projects. Both are active in the community, and Del Archuleta served two terms on the NMSU Board of Regents.
Now another generation is getting into the spotlight as well. Last fall, when Del Archuleta was presented with the College of Engineering's Distinguished Alumni Award, it was announced that his son, Daniel, was the college's outstanding senior for 2004-2005. On hand to celebrate the occasion was Daniel's younger brother, Miguel, who recently completed his first year in NMSU's professional golf management (PGM) program. Older brother Estefan graduated in 2003 with a degree in hotel, restaurant and tourism management.
Like her father, Ed Archuleta's daughter, Tara (Archuleta) Achen, also received two degrees from NMSU - an undergraduate degree in home economics in 1994 and a master's degree in education in 2004.
"NMSU has done everything for us," Ed Archuleta says. "That's why we're so supportive of it." |
