Aggies-on-the-Hill Named 2004 Chapter of the Year
The Aggies-on-the-Hill Chapter, which is composed of NMSU grads who work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, has been incredibly active since it held its first event in May 2004. They continue to raise the bar for NMSU alumni chapters all over the country. There currently are more then 600 Aggies employed at LANL and all are welcome to participate in the many events held by the group, which also encourages the participation of other alumni in the area. In March the group unveiled an official Web site.
It also is planning events for NMSU students working at LANL as interns this summer and a repeat of last year's very successful Fall Fest at NMSU's Sustainable Agricultural Science Center in Alcalde. This year's event will be held in August in conjunction with the center's open house. In December the chapter's efforts were formally recognized when Debbie Widger, former executive director of alumni relations, attended the chapter's holiday event at Anthony's at the Delta in Española and presented the group with the "Chapter of the Year" award. The group was selected, according to Debbie, because of its "dedication to promoting the mission of the university."
Las Vegas Alumni Reconnect
On Jan. 13, several alumni who live in the Las Vegas, Nevada, area gathered at Garduno's at the Palms for an evening of New Mexican cuisine, Aggie stories and reconnecting. Yvonne Morris '88, who had recently moved to Las Vegas, helped plan the event. The response was very positive and another event was planned for April 16 at Theron Goynes Park in North Las Vegas.
Alumni Legislative Reception
On Feb. 3, more than 120 NMSU alumni joined university faculty and staff members at an event in honor of New Mexico state legislators. The event was held at the Hotel and Spa at Loretto in Santa Fe.
Athletic Update in Albuquerque
On Feb. 23, athletic director McKinley Boston and football coach Hal Mumme held an evening of NMSU sports updates at Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen in Albuquerque. The meet and greet for area alumni and friends attracted more than 60 Aggies and members of the local news media who were interested in learning more about plans for spring training and Boston's vision for the future of Aggie sports.
Senior Night in Clayton
Bill '67 and Beverly Cantrell were kind enough again to host a dinner in honor of Clayton High School seniors who are headed to NMSU this fall and their parents. The event was held March 17 and centered around "Days at NMSU." Other Aggies who attended the event included Ken Cantrell '91, John Burgess '71, Hayley '99 and Manny Encinas '97 '98. Wes Holly and Chris Allison from the College of Agriculture and Home Economics provided an academic side to the evening.
