Failure to pass any single class in the C D curriculum precludes taking any additional C D coursework until the class has been retaken and successfully completed.
Be aware that the prerequisites for the courses listed below may also have prerequisites. All prerequisites must be satisfied before registering for a class. Students may be dropped from a class if prerequisites are not satisfied.
C D 221. Introduction to Communication Disorders 3 cr.
Basic information about speech, language, and hearing disorders and orientation to the profession of speech-language pathology and audiology.
C D 321. Clinical Methods 3 cr.
Supervised clinical observation of speech, language, and hearing services. Meets clinical observation requirement for participation in clinical practicum. Students must pass an oral and written competency exam before enrolling in C D 462. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 221, C D 360/C D 509 and 3.0 GPA, or consent of instructor.
C D 360. Language Acquisition 3 cr.
Normal development of language in children and analysis of adult language skills.
C D 370. Anatomy and Physiology of Speech Mechanisms 3 cr.
Vocal anatomy, the physical characteristics of speech sounds, and the psycho-physiological processes involved in hearing. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 221 and C D 360/C D 509, or consent of instructor. Same as C D 502.
C D 374. American Sign Language I 3 cr.
Introduction to the basics of ASL including questions, commands, sentence types, time, subjects and objects, classifiers, locative case, pluralization, and temporal and distributional aspects.
C D 375. American Sign Language II 3 cr.
Continuation of C D 374, ASL I. Emphasis on ASL grammar, spatial referencing, detailed descriptions, and deaf culture. Features dialogues, short stories, narratives. Prerequisite: C D 374 or consent of instructor.
C D 380. Speech Science 3 cr.
Use of instruments for laboratory study of problems in speech and hearing, studying and practicing typical experimental procedures and standard testing methods. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 321, C D 370/ C D 502, and C D 390/C D 501, or consent of instructor. Same as C D 503.
C D 390. Phonetics 3 cr.
The science of phonetics, including work with the International Phonetic Alphabet. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 221 and C D 360/C D 509, or consent of instructor.
C D 393. Clinical Computer Applications 3 cr.
The application of microcomputers for diagnosis, treatment, and administration of communication disorders. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 221 and C D 360/C D 509, or consent of instructor. Restricted to majors. Same as C D 593 except for differentiated assignments for graduate students.
C D 452. Articulation and Phonology 3 cr.
Covers normal development of articulation and phonology; etiologies, diagnosis and treatment of disorders. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 380/C D 503, C D 453, and C D 462, or consent of instructor.
C D 453. Language Disorders 3 cr.
Nature, symptoms, and causes of language disorders and the principal methods of rehabilitation. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 321, C D 370/ C D 502, and C D 390/C D 501, or consent of instructor.
C D 456. Audiology 3 cr.
Anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, auditory disorders, audiometric procedures. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 380/C D 503, C D 453, and C D 462, or consent of instructor.
C D 462. Clinical Procedures 3 cr.
Guidelines and procedures associated with the clinical and supervisory processes. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 321, C D 370/C D 502, C D 390/C D 501, and 3.0 GPA, or consent of instructor. Restricted to Communication Disorders majors.
C D 464. Aural Rehabilitation 3 cr.
Psychosocial aspects of hearing loss. Theoretical and practical strategies for hearing loss management. Prerequisite: C or better in C D 452, C D 456, and C D 481,or consent of instructor.
C D 476. American Sign Language III 3 cr.
Continuation of C D 375, ASL II. Focus on more complex grammatical features. Students will comprehend and generate medium length stories, narratives, and discussions including culturally significant topics. Prerequisite: C D 375.
C D 477. Manually-Coded English 3 cr.
Emphasis on manually-coded English systems available for presenting English grammar visually through a progression in the use of sign markers while speaking syntactically correct English. Prerequisite: B or better in C D 476.
C D 478. Bilingual Aspects in Sign Language 3 cr.
Through written/spoken/signed translation processes, students produce English equivalents for ASL lexicons and vice versa. Syntactical semantic considerations also studied. Analysis and restructuring of sentences in literary form of both languages will be conducted. Prerequisite: B or better in C D 476.
C D 479. Clinical Practicum 3 cr.
Supervised clinical practice with speech, language, and hearing disorders. Practicum includes diagnostic, treatment and management work through direct patient contact, and attendance at the weekly administrative clinical staff meeting. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 380/C D 503, C D 453, and C D 462,or consent of instructor; 3.0 GPA. May be repeated for a maximum of 6 credits. Restricted to Communication Disorders majors.
C D 481. Professional Issues 3 cr.
Issues in preservice education and training, professional standards, program development, employment, health care, and future perspectives. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 380/C D 503, C D 453, and C D 462, or consent of instructor.
C D 490. Training in Professional Teamwork 3 cr.
Study of and practice with cross-disciplinary and unidisciplinary models of professional teamwork. Prerequisites: C or better in C D 452, C D 456, and C D 481, or consent of instructor.
C D 491. Selected Topics 1-6 cr.
Individual and/or group study of selected topics. To be identified by subtitle. Prerequisite: prior arrangement with faculty supervisor(s).
