New Mexico State University has been accredited since 1926 by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools as a degree-granting institution. The university was accredited in 1954 by the American Association of University Women.

Within the College of Agriculture and Home Economics, the Department of Agricultural and Extension Education is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teachers of Education. The Department of Animal and Range Sciences is accredited by the Society for Range Management. The Department of Home Economics is accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teachers of Education and has had their Human Nutrition and Food Science Program approved by the American Dietetics Association.

In the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department of Chemistry is accredited by the American Chemical Society. Music curricula in the Department of Music are accredited by the National Association of Schools of Music. The master of public administration program in the Department of Government is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration.

The baccalaureate and graduate degree programs in business administration and accounting offered in the College of Business Administration and Economics are accredited by the American Assembly of Collegiate Schools of Business.

The university's teacher preparation program, which involves several colleges and which is directed by the College of Education, was accredited in 1962 by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education. Also, in the College of Education, the Communication Disorders master's program is accredited by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), and the undergraduate athletic training program in Physical Education, Recreation, and Dance is accredited by the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA). Both undergraduate and graduate programs in Special Education have been accredited by the Council on Exceptional Children. The undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare individuals for licensure to work in public and private schools in New Mexico have been approved by the New Mexico State Board of Education.

For the College of Engineering, the Engineering Accreditation Commission of the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) has accredited baccalaureate degree programs in agricultural, chemical, civil, electrical, geological, industrial, and mechanical engineering. The Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET has accredited the bachelor and associate degree programs in civil, electronic, and mechanical engineering technology. The Related Accreditation Commission of ABET has accredited the bachelor's degree program in surveying.

Within the College of Health and Social Services, the baccalaureate degree program in the Department of Nursing is accredited by the National League for Nursing. The baccalaureate and master's degree programs in the Department of Social Work are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education. The baccalaureate program in Health Science is accredited by the Society of Public Health Education/Association for the Advancement of Health Education.

The Division of Student Affairs has two accredited departments as well. The Counseling Center is fully accredited by the International Association of Counseling Services (IACS), and the Student Health Center is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
