The criminal justice degree plan is broadly interdisciplinary in nature embracing the study of the humanities, law, natural, behavioral and social sciences. The curriculum seeks to balance theoretical inquiry with applied knowledge.

Students are prepared for careers in law enforcement, corrections, probation and parole, work with juveniles, and the related field of industrial and institutional security. Graduates have also been successful in law school and graduate programs in criminal justice. The undergraduate major consists of at least 34 credits in the major field, 22 of which must be numbered 300 or above (excluding C J 393, Internship in Criminal Justice).

FIRST AND SECOND YEARS (66 credits)

Nondepartmental Requirements

C S 110G or HON 111G 3 cr.
ENGL 111G, Rhetoric and Composition 4 cr.
MATH 115, Intermediate Algebra, plus one of the following:
MATH 210G, Mathematics Appreciation, or
HON 275G, Spirit and Evolution of Mathematics, or
MATH 112G, Fundamentals of Elementary Mathematics II
(prerequisite: MATH 111); or
2 math courses beyond MATH 115 (6 cr.);

Admission to upper-division criminal justice classes does not occur until all requirements for the associate in criminal justice (see First and Second Years) have been met, including the same grade point requirement as for the Bachelor's degree.

THIRD AND FOURTH YEARS (62 credits)

Criminal Justice Electives:
5 upper-division criminal justice courses, two of which must be
numbered above 399 (not to include C J 393, Internship in Criminal
Justice, or any criminal justice requirements)
15 cr.

General Electives: Sufficient to bring the total credits to 128, including 55 upper-division credits.

ASSOCIATE IN CRIMINAL JUSTICE

The Department of Criminal Justice also offers an Associate in Criminal Justice degree. The requirements for this degree are identical to the first two years of the Bachelor of Criminal Justice degree with one exception: Students seeking the ACJ degree must fulfill the College of Arts and Sciences second language requirement by (1) completing a second language through the 112 level, (2) completing a second language through the 213 level, or (3) fulfilling one of the alternative methods (See "College Foreign Language Requirement" in the Languages and Linguistics section of this chapter).

Students must complete the last 15 semester credits at New Mexico State University (including branch campuses).
