C D 221. Introduction to Communication Disorders 3 cr.
Basic information about speech, language, and hearing disorders and orientation to the profession of speech-language pathology and audiology.
C D 321. Clinical Practicum Observation 3 cr.
Supervised clinical observation of speech, language, and hearing services. Meets clinical observation requirement for participation in clinical practicum. Prerequisite: CD 221 or consent of instructor. Same as C D/SPED 510 except for differentiated assignments for graduate students.
C D 360. Language Acquisition 3 cr.
Normal development of language in children and analysis of adult language skills.
C D 370. Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and
Hearing Mechanisms
3 cr.
Vocal anatomy, the physical characteristics of speech sounds, and the psycho-physiological processes involved in hearing.
C D 374. Manually-Communicated English 3 cr.
Manually-communicated English with emphasis on sign systems developed for instructing English to deaf and hard-of-hearing students. Practice in educational settings required. Same as C D 574.
C D 375. American Sign Language 3 cr.
Emphasis on formal signs, lexicons, finger spelling, markers, and classifiers and its place in deaf culture. Practice in social settings required. Prerequisite: C D 374. Same as C D 575 except for differentiated assignments for graduate students.
C D 380. Introduction to Speech Science 3 cr. (2+3P)
Use of instruments for laboratory study of problems in speech and hearing, studying and practicing typical experimental procedures and standard testing methods. Prerequisite: C D 370 or C D 502 or consent of instructor. Same as C D 503.
C D 390. Phonetics 3 cr.
The science of phonetics, including work with the International Phonetic Alphabet.
C D 393. Clinical Microcomputer Applications 3 cr.
The application of microcomputers for diagnosis, treatment, and administration of communication disorders. Same as C D 593 except for differentiated assignments for graduate students.
C D 452. Speech Pathology 3 cr.
Nature, symptoms, and causes of speech disorders and the principal methods of rehabilitation. Prerequisites/corequisites: C D 370, C D 380, and C D 390, or consent of instructor.
C D 453. Language Pathology 3 cr.
Nature, symptoms, and causes of language disorders and the principal methods of rehabilitation. Prerequisites: C D 360, C D 370, C D 380, and C D 390, or consent of instructor.
C D 456. Audiometry 3 cr. (2+3P)
Instruments and their application to the testing of hearing. Prerequisites: C D 370, C D 380, or consent of instructor.
C D 462. Pre-Clinical Practicum 3 cr.
Guidelines and procedures associated with the clinical and supervisory processes. Prerequisites: C D 321, C D 360, C D 370, C D 380, C D 390, and 2.75 GPA; or consent of instructor. Restricted to Communication Disorders majors.
C D 464. Auditory Disorders and Habilitation 3 cr.
Auditory disorders and habilitation, stressing the use of hearing aids, auditory training, speech reading, normal development of auditory skills, and the relation to speech and language. Prerequisite: C D 321 or consent of instructor.
C D 479. Clinical Practicum 3 cr.
Supervised clinical practice with speech, language, and hearing disorders. Practicum includes diagnostic, treatment and management work through direct patient contact, and attendance at the weekly administrative clinical staff meeting. May be repeated for a total of 9 credits. Prerequisites: C D 321, C D 360, C D 370, C D 380, C D 390, C D 462, and 2.75 GPA; or consent of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of 9 credits. Restricted to Communication Disorders majors.
C D 480. Audiology 3 cr. (2+3P)
The bases of hearing, hearing problems, and the testing of hearing. Prerequisite: C D 456 or consent of instructor.
C D 481. Administering Speech and Hearing Services 3 cr.
Rationale, planning, implementation, and evaluation of speech, language, and hearing services in schools, community clinics, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, nursing homes, residential programs, and private practice.
C D 490. Training in Professional Teamwork 3 cr.
Study of and practice with cross-disciplinary and unidisciplinary models of professional teamwork. Prerequisites: C D 360, C D 452, and C D 453, or consent of instructor.
C D 491. Selected Topics 1-6 cr.
Individual and/or group study of selected topics. To be identified by subtitle. Prerequisite: prior arrangement with faculty supervisor(s).
C D 491H. Selected Topics 1-6 cr.
Same as C D 491. Additional work to be arranged.
C D 495. Evaluation of Communication Disorders 3 cr.
The diagnosis and evaluation of communication disorders using behavioral and objective techniques. Prerequisites: C D 452 and C D 453, or consent of instructor.
