CD 221. Introduction to Communication Disorders3 cr.
Basic information about speech, language, and hearing disorders and orientation to the profession of speech-language pathology and audiology.
CD 321. Clinical Practicum Observation3 cr.
Supervised clinical observation of speech, language, and hearing services. Meets clinical observation requirement for participation in clinical practicum. Prerequisite: CD 221 or consent of instructor. Same as CD/SPED510 except for differentiated assignments for graduate students.
CD 360. Language Acquisition3 cr.
Normal development of language in children and analysis of adult language skills.
CD 370. Anatomy and Physiology of the Speech and
Hearing Mechanisms3 cr.
Vocal anatomy, the physical characteristics of speech sounds, and the psycho-physiological processes involved in hearing.
CD 374. American Sign Language I3 cr.
Introduction to the basics of ASL including questions, commands, sentence types, time, subjects and objects, classifiers, locative case, pluralization, and temporal and distributional aspects.
CD 375. American Sign Language II3 cr.
Continuation of C D 374, ASL I. Emphasis on ASL grammar, spatial referencing, detailed descriptions, and deaf culture. Features dialogues, short stories, narratives. Prerequisite: CD374 or consent of instructor.
C D 376. American Sign Language III3 cr.
Continuation of C D 375, ASL II. Focus on more complex grammatical features. Students will comprehend and generate medium length stories, narratives, and discussions including culturally significant topics. Prerequisite: C D 375. Same as C D 574 with differentiated assignments for graduate students.
CD 380. Introduction to Speech Science3 cr. (2+3P)
Use of instruments for laboratory study of problems in speech and hearing, studying and practicing typical experimental procedures and standard testing methods. Prerequisite: C D 370 or C D 502 or consent of instructor. Same as C D 503.
CD 390. Phonetics3 cr.
The science of phonetics, including work with the International Phonetic Alphabet.
CD 393. Clinical Microcomputer Applications3 cr.
The application of microcomputers for diagnosis, treatment, and administration of communication disorders. Same as CD593 except for differentiated assignments for graduate students.
CD 452. Speech Pathology3 cr.
Nature, symptoms, and causes of speech disorders and the principal methods of rehabilitation. Prerequisites/corequisites: CD370, CD380, and CD390, or consent of instructor.
CD 453. Language Pathology3 cr.
Nature, symptoms, and causes of language disorders and the principal methods of rehabilitation. Prerequisites: C D 360, CD370, CD380, and CD390, or consent of instructor.
CD 456. Introduction to Audiology3 cr.
Anatomy and physiology of the auditory system, auditory disorders, audiometric procedures. prerequisites: CD370, CD380, or consent of instructor.
CD 462. Pre-Clinical Practicum3 cr.
Guidelines and procedures associated with the clinical and supervisory processes. Prerequisites: CD321, CD360, CD370, CD380, CD390, and 2.75 GPA; or consent of instructor. Restricted to Communication Disorders majors.
CD 464. Aural Rehabilitation3 cr.
Psychosocial aspects of hearing loss. Theoretical and practical strategies for hearing loss management. Prerequisite: CD380, C D 456, or consent of instructor.
CD 479. Clinical Practicum3 cr.
Supervised clinical practice with speech, language, and hearing disorders. Practicum includes diagnostic, treatment and management work through direct patient contact, and attendance at the weekly administrative clinical staff meeting. May be repeated for a total of 9 credits. Prerequisites: CD321, CD360, CD370, CD380, CD390, CD462, and 2.75 GPA; or consent of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of 9 credits. Restricted to Communication Disorders majors.
CD 480. Clinical Reporting3 cr.
Application of professional reporting procedures for a variety of clinical settings and purposes. Prerequisite: CD456 or consent of instructor.
CD 481. Administering Speech and Hearing Services3 cr.
Rationale, planning, implementation, and evaluation of speech, language, and hearing services in schools, community clinics, rehabilitation centers, hospitals, nursing homes, residential programs, and private practice.
CD 490. Training in Professional Teamwork3 cr.
Study of and practice with cross-disciplinary and unidisciplinary models of professional teamwork. Prerequisites: CD360, CD452, and CD453, or consent of instructor.
CD 491. Selected Topics1-6 cr.
Individual and/or group study of selected topics. To be identified by subtitle. Prerequisite: prior arrangement with faculty supervisor(s).
CD 495. Evaluation of Communication Disorders3 cr.
The diagnosis and evaluation of communication disorders using behavioral and objective techniques. Prerequisites: CD452 and CD453, or consent of instructor.
