BCH E 140. Introduction to Biochemistry1 cr.

A description of the nature of inquiry in biochemistry, especially with respect to the interaction of chemistry and biology. Both historical development and topics of current interest will be discussed. Graded S/U.

BCH E 241. Introduction to Research in Biochemistry1-3 cr.

Techniques and procedures of biochemical research. Prerequisites: 8 credits of chemistry and 3.0 GPA in chemistry. May be repeated for a maximum of 3 credits.

BCH E 341. Survey of Biochemistry4 cr. (3+3P)

Biochemical cycles and metabolic regulations including sugar metabolism, blood pH maintenance, photosynthesis, urea cycle, membranes, hormonal regulations, bioenergetics and the properties of proteins and enzymes. Prerequisite: CHEM 211.

BCH E 395. Biochemistry4 cr.(3+3P)

Principles governing the physics and chemistry of life processes with emphasis on the relationships between molecular structure and cell function. Prerequisites: CHEM 314.

BCH E 396. Biochemistry and Biotechnology3 cr.

Expression of genetic information and its regulation. Anabolic metabolism of biomolecules. Recombinant DNA technologies and the biochemical basis for bioindustrial applications. Prerequisite: BCH E 395.

BCH E 396H. Biochemistry and Biotechnology - Honors3 cr.

Same as BCH E 396 with additional work required.

BCH E 440. Biochemistry Seminar1 cr.

Introduction to current literature in biochemistry and molecular biology. Selected topics in the field will be presented by the faculty. Students will present written and oral reports from literature searches. Prerequisite: BCH E 395. Graded S/U.

BCH E 441. Advanced Research in Biochemistry1-3 cr.

Investigation of biochemical problems and the development of special techniques. Prerequisites: consent of instructor, 16 credits of chemistry and 3.0 GPA in chemistry for nonmajors. May be repeated for a maximum of 3 credits.

BCH E 441H. Advanced Research in Biochemistry--Honors1-3 cr.

Same as BCH E 441. Additional work to be arranged. Prerequisites: consent of instructor, 16 credits of chemistry and 3.0 GPA in chemistry for nonmajors. May be repeated for a maximum of 3 credits.

BCH E 446. Intermediary Metabolism and Metabolic Regulation3 cr.

Catabolic and anabolic pathways of carbohydrates, lipids, amino acids, and nucleic acids, including their metabolic regulation are presented with their respective mechanistic, structural, functional, and evolutionary bases for existence. Prerequisites: BCH E 395 and either BCH E 396 or consent of instructor.

BCH E 451. Special Topics1-3 cr.

Same as CHEM 451. Prerequisite: consent of instructor. May be repeated for a maximum of 12 credits.

BCH E 494. Techniques in Genetic Engineering4 cr. (2+6P)

Basic laboratory techniques required for research involving recombinant DNA technology: structured experimental procedures, including nucleic acid isolation and purification, as well as the identification and manipulation of genes and genetic material of both bacterial and plant origin. Prerequisites: BCH E 395, 396, and consent of instructor.
