Getting started with Work-Study
Work-Study facts
- Work-Study is a federal and state funded, need based financial aid program that provides part-time employment to undergraduate and graduate students.
- To be eligible for work-study you must complete your annual Free Application for Student Aid (FAFSA).
- Funds are limited and awarded on a first-come, first-serve basis.
- New Mexico State University contracts with off-campus organizations that fall under the following criteria of non-profit (501(c)(3) agencies), non-religious, and non-partisan to also hire work-study students.
Types of Work-Study
- Federal and state work-study students must enroll in at least 6 credit hours (undergraduates) or 5 credit hours (graduates) and must maintain satisfactory academic progress.
- Crimson Scholar work-study students must be enrolled in at least 7 credit hours (6 credit hours for summer sessions) and must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
Students seeking Work-Study must have
- A demonstrated adequate financial need and a current FAFSA.
- A high school diploma or General Education Development (GED) certificate.
- Been accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program.
- U.S. citizenship or be an eligible noncitizen.
- A valid Social Security Number.
- Satisfactory academic progress in your program.
In addition, students cannot not be in default on a federal student loan or owe money on a federal student grant. You must use federal student aid money only for educational purposes. To learn more about work-study contact your financial aid advisor.

To browse work-study opportunities, select the “Guest Login” option. Next, select "Job Postings" → "Work-Study Jobs."
Found a work-study position? You will need to create an account to apply.
- Create an account here: AggieCareerManager Student & Alumnus Login, then select "Click here to register!"

Complete your registration information, making sure to complete and sign the "NMSU Registration Agreement" toward the bottom of the page.
After you have completed your registration, go back to the AggieCareer Manager Student & Alumnus Login webpage and type in your new user name (nine-digit Banner ID) and password.
Once you are logged in, select "My Account" → "My Profile." Review your profile information to ensure its accuracy and completion.
Select "My Account" → "My Documents." This is where you can upload all documents required by your work-study position.
To double-check the documents required by your work-study position, select "Job Postings" → "Work-Study Jobs" then find your position.
Once you have found what documents your work-study position requires, you can go back to the upload page by selecting "My Account" → "My Documents."
After you finish uploading your documents, you can check out the "My Connections" page also located under "My Account." The My Connections page allows for professional social networking online through a host of different user interface options including:
Additional information about Work-Study
- A work-study award does not guarantee employment.
- Work-study awards will be cancelled if employment is not obtained within 30 days of the beginning of the semester that you applied for work-study.
- To be eligible for work-study undergraduate students must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 and graduate students must maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Students typically work 10 hours per week up to a maximum of 20 hours per week.
- Pay begins at minimum wage but may range higher.
- A student’s earnings may not exceed their work-study award.
- A student may only have one type of work-study award per academic year.If a student’s work-study award is modified they should immediately notify their employer of the change.
NMSU Human Resource Services now requires background reviews for some employees. Those requiring a background review shall have their criminal and other background information verified prior to final confirmation of employment.
