Q: What's new this year?
A: A lot!
Deposit
You may have noticed that your $200 prepayment from the 2011-2012 academic year has already been returned to your student account. As such, a new $200 prepayment will be charged to your student account as part of the Room Rodeo process.
Garcia & Cervantes Refurbishments
Both Garcia Hall and Cervantes Village will be receiving an updated look this summer!
Out with the white and turquoise metal furniture in Garcia….. In with the sleek, moveable, and modern furniture! Garcia is receiving new carpet, blinds, locks, dressers, loftable beds, multi-functional desks and storage spaces, and much more room! The extra space created by our new, functional furniture allows students more space within their rooms for personal items and activities.
Cervantes is also receiving new furniture including full-size beds and new drawer storage units for the bedroom and new living room furniture. Living room and bedrooms will be carpeted as well. (Note: new furnishings are for the 2- and 4-bdrm apartments only. The efficiency spaces have already been refurbished.)

Garcia Programmatic Changes
We have two new themed patios also coming to Garcia Hall:
Impact
Where is it? Located in A-Patio of Garcia Hall.
Who lives there? This community is open to students of all majors with an interest in leadership, social justice, and multiculturalism.
What do they do? Students increase their leadership potential through diverse activities such as community service, leadership training workshops, experiential trips, and mentoring relationships. “Impact” is aimed to help students succeed in an increasingly globalized society, with an emphasis on multiculturalism, social justice and service to their communities. “Impact” is a community open to all students who want to engage with others in a safe, inclusive living environment.
Balance
Where is it? Housed in D-Patio of Garcia Hall.
Who lives there? Students of all majors throughout their college experience who have an interest in health and wellness. “Balance” is not just for health and fitness enthusiasts; the focus is applicable for any student at NMSU.
What do they do? “Balance” is a place for students to learn about and practice a healthy approach to making their minds and bodies fit. This community is committed to maintaining a healthy lifestyle and providing students with a living environment to foster this. Students living in “Balance” will have the opportunity to invest in interest areas such as substance free living, nutrition and fitness, outdoor recreation, and mental health. Students can participate in activities and events such as: healthy cooking/potlucks, camping/outdoor recreation, competing in intramural teams, and meditation workshops.
Monagle Singles
We are offering single occupancy spaces in Monagle Hall to cater to those students who want to live in the Residence Halls but do not want to share a room with a roommate. Singles will be provided to upperclassmen first and this option will be available during the Monagle Selection Day of the Room Rodeo process. (Rooms will still be furnished as double occupancy).
Living Learning Communities
We have a brand new Living Learning Community launching this Fall in Garcia Hall! Innovation Den, or iD, will focus on entrepreneurship and is open to all majors and all academic progress levels.
iD will encompass a wide range of activities focusing on those students interested in learning and developing their entrepreneurial mindset. Students in this LLC will be able to learn from local entrepreneurs, participate in Innovation Challenges, develop their own business plans and practice innovative thought.
Further, we have rearranged some of the LLC placements:
Monagle Hall LLC Placements
The Engineering LLC will now be located on the second and third floors of second patio, with Honors occupying the second and third floors of third patio. The PrePharmacy community will be moving to the third floor of first patio.
Garcia Hall LLC Placements
The iD LLC will be situated on the C300 even patio. PGM will relocate to C300 odd patio and the Business LLC will relocate to the C200 patio.

Q: What if I want to keep my same space for next year?
A: Each living area will have a “same room renewal” time that allows you to do just that. Check the renewal calendar for the specific date and time that same room sign-up will be happening for your living area. In Pinon Hall, we cap the number of renewals at 100. So if you want to return to Pinon – participate early!
Q: I made a room selection but now I want to select a different space. How can I choose a different room or apartment?
A: Send a quick email to housing@nmsu.edu letting us know you’d like to do something different. We will remove your initial room selection and you will be able to select from the available rooms or apartments in the next selection process for which you are eligible.
Q: I currently live in the graduate community at VDM. Do I have to participate in Room Rodeo?
A: No. Your agreement with campus housing is month-to-month. Your apartment assignment continues until you give notice that you will be leaving.
Q: How do I know what type of space I’m selecting?
A: The room type field provides a description of the space. For example, GARC-dbl is a double occupancy space in Garcia Hall. MONG-triple is a triple occupancy space in Monagle. If you see ‘hc’ as part of the room type field, it means that space is ADA-compliant and has modifications designed to accommodate a student in a wheelchair. The room type field in apartment communities will tell you how many bedrooms that apartment has. For example, CHAM-1 bdrm is a one bedroom apartment in Chamisa Village. VDM-2 bdrm is a two bedroom apartment in Vista del Monte. CERV-effdup is an efficiency apartment in Cervantes Village. (Two efficiency apartments share the same bathroom.)
Q: I want to request a roommate who doesn’t currently live on campus. How do I do that?
A: The person you’d like as your roommate needs to apply for campus housing for the fall semester. This will make him/her eligible to be selected as your roommate. Once your friend has applied, please notify the Housing Office so we can include him/her in the renewal process. You will then need to mutually select each other as roommates through your myHousing accounts. On room selection day, you, as the current resident, will need to select the assignment for next year. Your selection will “pull in” your friend as your roommate.
Q: How do I know what spaces are open for me to choose from?
A: When you log into myHousing and pick “room selection”, the program will display available rooms in the area open for renewal on that day. So, on the day we’re running Chamisa renewals, available spaces within Chamisa Village will be displayed. The system will only display rooms which you are eligible for based upon your gender and the number of roommates you have requested.
Q: What do I do if the room I want is not showing on myHousing?
A: If the room you want doesn't appear, it probably isn't available. Contact the Housing Office at 646-3202 and our staff will be happy to review your options with you.
Q: I want to live in one of the Living Learning Communities (LLC). How do I know which room to select?
A: The room type field provides a description that includes the LLC designation (if any). The LLC designations are: A&HE - Ag & Home Ec, ARTS - Fine Arts, NAT SCI – Natural Sciences, BUSI - Business, , EDU - Education, PGM - Professional Golf Management, HONORS - Honors, ENGR – Engineering, PRE PHARM – PrePharmacy, iD – Innovation Den. PGM, Engineering, Honors, PrePharmacy and iD Living Learning Communities all require approval from the program for occupancy. If you sign up for one of these spaces and are then not approved to live there, a new assignment will be chosen for you by housing staff.
Q: What if I select a room for next year but then decide I don't want to live on campus?
A: Once you have selected a room and it has been assigned to you, the terms of the housing agreement apply. You would need to formally cancel your housing agreement. Depending upon when you cancel, you will forfeit some, or all, of your prepayment.
Q: What happens if I don't select a room during Room Rodeo ’12? What if I change my mind later and want to live on campus?
A: If you do not choose a room or apartment during Room Rodeo, then you will not have campus housing for the coming academic year. There will be a Last Chance room selection opportunity after Room Rodeo.. Last Chance will run from May 1 through May 3 only. Once Last Chance is closed, you will need to reapply (including the $200 prepayment) as a new resident to request campus housing.
Q: I don't plan to live on campus next year. Do I need to notify you of my intentions?
A: If you don’t plan to live on campus next year, there’s nothing you need to do. Your current housing agreement will end on May 12, 2012.
