For Students
Our Students
Students in the College of Health and Social Services are the future nurses, social workers and public and community health professionals of tomorrow. We are turning out students who rise above and beyond their potential not only as professionals but as successful and contributing members of society.
Applied Studies
Our College offers a wealth of hands-on training and applied services. For example: The Border Health Education and Training Center (BHETC) offers with SoAHEC a variety of outreach programs that provide both continuing education for practicing professionals, bilingual training for students and care givers, school-based health career programs, cultural sensitivity to the problems of rural and border health communities, and bilingual community health leadership training groups. BHETC offers students as well as faculty from across the nation an opportunity to experience life in the rural communities of Mexico with supervised on-site visits to clinics and schools. Students are also involved in the assessment of programs devoted to common challenges such as diabetes and teen pregnancy.
Student Research
Graduate students are involved in the interdiscplinary study of border health, health disparities, and factors affecting health at all ages including the use of tobacco. An emerging focus is on the cultural and socio-economic factors affecting health including studies related to addiction, obesity, diabetes prevention, chonic disease mamgement, behavioral health, and the long term impact of health lifestyles upon longevity. Other studies have investigated patterns of domestic violence and drug abuse in families and communities.
CHSS Student Ambassador Program
The CHSS Student Ambassadors are highly motivated students, who represent the College of Health Social Services, and whose goal is to educate and/or recruit students to either a specific degree program in CHSS or to NMSU in general. Our Student Ambassadors volunteer their time and talents while gaining a wealth of experience in networking, recruiting and creating rewarding experiences and friendships that will last a lifetime both within CHSS and the community at large.
Our Student Ambassdors participate in on-campus recruitment events for CHSS, the NMSU President's Office, NMSU Office of Admissions and
university wide events such as Aggie Welcome Week, New Student Orientations, Spring Visitor’s Day, and Aggie Experience!
CHSS is always looking for friendly, fun and dedicated students to join the CHSS student ambassador team. Become a student ambassador today!
