Outreach
Community and Social Outreach
There are two specific outreach efforts in Border Health and Health Education. The first, known as Southern Area Health Education Council (SoAHEC), is dependent upon grant support to study health related issues in the communities of southern New Mexico. This group currently collaborates with the University of New Mexico Health and Science Center by serving as a local focus for the HERO Program with the College of Agriculture. This effort is directed at assessing and alleviating shortages of health providers in the rural communities of our state. It incorporates the platform of the extension offices of the College of Agriculture to reach the residents of these communties.
The Border Health Education and Training Center (BHETC) offers with SoAHEC a variety of outreach programs that provide both continuing education for practicing professionals, bilingual training for students and care givers, school-based health career programs, cultural sensitivity to the problems of rural and border health communities, and bilingual community health leadership training groups. The BHETC offers students as well as faculty from across the nation an opportunity to experience life in the rural communities of Mexico with supervised on-site visits to clinics and schools. Students are involved in the assessment of programs devoted to common challenges such as diabetes and teen pregnancy.
College Outreach and Volunteering
The College of Health and Social Services Students, Faculty, Staff, Alumni and Friends have an impact on the college through their time and talents. Our challenge is to take what we know about CHSS and share it with others. Our College has strong academic programs, bright students, and dedicated faculty and staff. Our graduates are the future nurses, social workers and public and community health professionals of tomorrow. Continued support from the state and federal government, as well as private gifts, is essential to the college's ability to achieve excellence. Together we make CHSS a stronger community and excel in turning out students who rise above and beyond their potential not only as professionals but as successful and contributing members of society.
