Who & What Is Available through the Instructional Media Production Facility Responsibilities of the Facility Staff
Welcome to the Instructional Media Production Facility's description of services provided by the College's CHSS Instructional Media Specialist. The goal is always to serve the students of the College by equipping HSS faculty with usable tools in the physical classroom as well as in the virtual classroom.
Please consult this page, especially if you are experiencing technical problems. You may save significant time by referring to the expected contact for the type of problem(s) you may be experiencing.
Direct Instructional Support - Prep for Distance Education, "Blended", and In-Person Delivery (Las Cruces campus)
If you (and your graduate teaching assistant, if this applies) are supplementing your course with WebCT or delivering your course entirely via WebCT, facility staff can continue assist you after you have completed your basic, intensive training through ICT Training Services.
- Training and assistance for faculty (full-time, part-time, and graduate teaching assistance) in the use of the classroom-based technology in the 2nd and 3rd floor classrooms.
- Training and assistance for students/classes in the use of the classroom-based technology in the 2nd and 3rd floor classrooms. Faculty may request/schedule such training for tasks such as WinDVD video "bookmarking", WebCT usage, etc.
- Editing, modifying or refreshing content delivered by WebCT
- The deployment of quizzes using WebCT or Respondus
- Conversion of your PowerPoint presentation to additional formats such as Flash (through Camtasia Studio 3) or Impatica
- Conversion of instructional videos to password-protected streaming formats and other enhancements can be completed through the Instructional Media Production Facility. Samples of these can be found on our facility's Documents and Links page.
- Presentation of targeted skill sets to classes or groups. For example, cohort orientation meetings can include a brief overview on learning technologies that students are expected to know how to use with their first assignments in courses.
- Recording of student groups, such as mock interviews or therapy sessions. The service also includes streaming and/or DVD delivery of finished recordings (video and/or audio).
Direct Instructional Support - Prep for Distance Education, "Blended", and In-Person Delivery (non-Las Cruces campuses)
Because of the physical distance between the Las Cruces campus (where the production facility and offices are located) and the auxiliary campuses, support is primarily indirect and provided in the form of WebCT and streaming media production support.
For non-Las Cruces sites, a/the site coordinator must schedule a visit should include the costs of travel and overnight accomodations.
- Recording of student groups, such as mock interviews or therapy sessions. The service also includes streaming and/or DVD delivery of finished recordings (video and/or audio). For non-Las Cruces sites, a/the site coordinator must schedule a visit should include the costs of travel and overnight accomodations. Because of the costs and time involved, all recordings must be accomplished in one seven-hour day (plus an hour block for lunch).
Indirect Instructional Support - College and Unit websites/pages
There are duties assigned by the Associate Dean or the Dean that augment the instruction process.
- Unit website updating
- Updates take place on Fridays unless a request to Dr. Luis A. Vazquez (acting associate dean) indicates that content must be presented earlier than the weekly scheduled date.
- Department of Health Science - main web contact is staff member Jane Boykin.
- School of Nursing - main web contact is staff member Miriam Maske.
- School of Social Work - main web contact is staff member Dottie Crews.
Tasks The Facility Cannot Accomplish
The rule of thumb for these is "...if it is not directly related to the delivery of my course materials, it is probably not a task for which the facility can provide assistance":
- Email issues, including setup and troubleshooting
- Basic computer usage, such as copying and moving files
- General computer use, such as how to accomplish a comprehensive virus scan or data back-up. For the latter, an online tutorial has been available.
- General non-instructional videography or still photography.
Rex is employed by the College of Health & Social Services and is supervised by Dr. Luis A. Vazquez, Acting Associate Dean of Academics in the College. Non-instructional computer problems such as the following must be directed to your appropropriate unit/departmental contact for an ICT work-order; there are a number of tools and secured materials to which Rex and the College have no direct access: Also, due to the limitation of having only one College staff person to provide these services to the entire College, many of the tasks must be scheduled ahead of time.
- While the staff is available during regular business hours, Monday through Friday to assist, at a moment's notice when a equipment-based problem exists in a classroom during class, these services are not available after hours or on the weekends. If you have a special need requiring such staff availability after 5:15 pm on weekdays or on the weekends, at least seven business days notice is expected to allow any scheduling.
- The facility is a by-appointment only facility. We wish to help students whenever we can and wish for faculty to understand that we must be able to get scheduled production tasks the expected focus. Please don't send students to the production facilities "unannounced".
- If you are a faculty member and have a specialized poster presentation which you would like to have printed by the facility and paid for by your unit or project, please submit your request to Dr. Luis A. Vazquez
- If you are a faculty member, instructor, GTA or staff member and have a non-instructional task you really feel that Rex or the facility can perform and you would prefer to work within the College, please contact Dr. Luis A. Vazquez
Faculty-initiated includes the reserved use of computers in HSS 329 or in HSS 318A, which graduate teaching students can also use. The purpose of these stations is to offer applications and capabilities not necessarily available in the CHSS faculty member's office. Faculty also initiate their use of the facility by visiting, calling or emailing the facility. Some uses, such as check-out "projectors" and check-out "laptop computers", may require advance training or consultation.
- Use of the Faculty/GA production stations
- Use of color laser printer for instruction-related "jobs" of less than 100 pages.
- Use of large format printer - supply replenishment covered by department/unit*
- Use of high-speed document scanner - prepare single- or double-sized sheet-based documents to PDF for online use.
- Request for the training of students, in classroom setting, in the use of equipment before use in instructor- or grant-required projects. Can also include instruction on more effective use, such as PowerPoint, etc.
- Request for consultation for videotaping students' interview and group therapy simulations. Will burn taped episodes to DVD and/or convert to web-streaming formats.

To better provide faculty and instructor support in the use of the HSS classrooms and provided equipment, we have created the online version of the Faculty Projected Technology Needs Form. Please complete this for each unique section of each course you are teach by the end of the first week of the Spring Semester. Additionally, if you expect your students to receive course-related assistance from the staff of the facility, the staff needs this form, syllabi and any other documents that inform them of your students' potential assistance needs.
