MISSION STATEMENT

Chicano Programs is a support service that promotes and empowers all student success through education, advocacy and development of cultural literacy.

WHAT IS CHICANO PROGRAMS?

Chicano Programs offers programs for the recruitment and retention of Chicano and U.S. Latino students. As a part of this mission, Chicano Programs offers assistance in navigating what for many ethnic students is a complicated and unfamiliar university environment. The primary goal of our office is to help qualified students to overcome any cultural or institutional barriers that may prevent them from enrolling in the university and graduating with a four-year degree.

NMSU students and potential students can obtain scholarship, internship, and employment information specific to Chicanos and Latinos. Also academic counseling, referral to a myriad of Student Service offices on campus, as well as Student Advocacy is available through our office. This homepage has been set up for year-round information on Scholarship deadlines, internship and employment opportunities, student conferences, announcements regarding the Hispanic Student Organizations, and other additional information.

Chicano Programs actively supports and provides guidance for the Hispanic Student Organizations. The office co-sponsors programs of cultural interest and is involved in the community in a number of different events including the Mariachi Conference and the Border Book Festival. We sponsor the Danny Villanueva Breakfast which together with alumnus, Danny Villanueva raises scholarship funds for Hispanic students at NMSU. Chicano Week is also one of our projects, a celebration of Chicano/Latino culture during the Spring Semester

Chicano Programs wants to be of help to you. The organization is proud to provide information that is needed by the students of NMSU. The Chicano Programs' Office is located @ Garcia Annex, Room 138. There is also a Chicano programs Lounge (Room 142) that has a quiet studying space and a self-sufficient computer lab. The computer lab hours are 8:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Monday-Thursday and 8:00 am - 5:00 p.m. on Friday.

Chicano Programs has computer terminals set up in the lounge for student use. They are computers with access to the internet. Chicano Programs computer technicians will help you learn how to surf the net and access a Database for your term paper. Come in soon!
