NMSU Wireless Network Policy – (Admin Council approved)

Purpose of policy: This policy was enacted to insure the continued safety and usability of the network infrastructure at NMSU. It also seeks to preserve the confidentiality of private, non-public information. It’s intent is to provide the best possible wireless network service, ensure wired and wireless network security and integrity, and minimize the interference between the campus wireless network and other products deployed throughout campus.

In addition to the potential interference problems, wireless networks are inherently less secure than wired networks. Only by proper implementation and operation can effective security be maintained. A network-wide approach must be taken to 1) keep interference to a minimum 2) secure the campus wireless networks and 3) insure the integrity of the campus computing systems connected to these networks. Errors in configuration or operation on wireless networks can have unintended and devastating effects on other parts of the campus network and can result in widespread outages.

Individuals and departments should not independently deploy wireless networking products. ICT’s Telecommunication and Networking Services will work with any University departments wishing to install wireless networking in their areas.
Installation, engineering, maintenance, and operation of wireless networks serving University faculty, staff, or students, on any property owned or tenanted by the University, is the sole responsibility of ICT’s Telecommunication and Networking Services. Any wireless communications equipment independently installed without prior approval will be subject to removal without notice.
