Re: NMSU's Nondiscrimination Policy
As we begin a new year and a new semester, it is important that we all remember that
NMSU is committed to diversity at all levels. Several unacceptable incidents
took place on our campus last semester. For example, after National Coming Out
Day, hate messages against our gay students were chalked on sidewalks near Corbett
Center and Guthrie Hall. I take this opportunity to remind the University
community that NMSU has a Nondiscrimination Policy, which states:
The university is dedicated to providing equal employment and educational
opportunities to all persons without regard to age, ancestry, color, disability,
gender, national origin, race, religion, sexual orientation, or veteran status.
Be assured, I fully support NMSU's Nondiscrimination Policy and will ensure that it is
rigorously followed at our university, including our four community colleges. The
basic dignity and worth of all human beings are to be held in high regard across NMSU.
Any comments, jokes, or remarks which denigrate the worth of an individual are inappropriate
and totally unacceptable. Violence or harassment of any kind are not acceptable
and will not be tolerated at NMSU. We expect every member of the NMSU community
to appreciate and embrace our Nondiscrimination Policy. Appropriate disciplinary
action will be taken if violations occur.
Christina Chavez Kelley, Senior Assistant to the President; Scott Moore, Dean of
Students; and Jerry Nevarez, Equity Specialist with the Office of Institutional Equity,
will work closely with members of the Stonewall Coalition and our InterFaith
Council to make sensitivity training available to faculty, staff, and students in
assisting them in celebrating and respecting our diversity.
If you have any questions regarding this matter, please contact Ms. Chavez Kelley at
646 1729, ckelley@nmsu.edu, or Mr. Moore at 646-1722, smoore@nmsu.edu.
