Reminder: Annual Update of Emergency Action Plans

As we will soon be conducting building evacuations, i.e 'No notice fire drills' September 8 - 11, 2009 (see 2009 Safety Health and Security Initiatives), Departments are reminded to update and post their Emergency Action Plans (EAP).  This plan is established to provide information on what employees are expected to do in an emergency and where to go in an evacuation. Departments should establish their internal phone tree and email list. The plan should also identify how information, such as alerts and warnings, will be disseminated to others under your supervision or responsibility whether they are in classroom, office, laboratory or field setting.

Under NMSU Policy, each department is responsible for having and updating an Emergency Action Plan and discussing the plan with their employees. All instructors need to review safety and emergency procedures with students during the first week of class. The requirements include identifying the EAP coordinators for departmental areas. Further guidance is provided under the Policies section (at http://www.nmsu.edu/safety/policies/policy_emergency_action_plan.htm) and under Emergency Management (at http://www.nmsu.edu/~safety/emergency.htm) on the NMSU Safety website (http://safety.nmsu.edu).

Building monitors should check and report any emergency safety devices such as exit signs, fire extinguishers, smoke doors, etc., that are damaged, missing, out-of-date, or not operating. Just place a maintenance work order to Office of Facilities and Services for repair (at http://www.ppd.nmsu.edu/wo_request.html)

Emergency Planning as well as Employee Safety & Hazard Communication classes are provided by EH&S (class schedule at http://www.nmsu.edu/~safety/training/class_schedule_index.htm) to assist in developing an Emergency Action Plan and procedures for general safety and preparedness. Please check our Safety website (http://safety.nmsu.edu) or contact us at 646-3327 if you need assistance with emergency preparedness planning.
