SAFETY EXPOSITION & TRADE SHOW

On September 15, the University Safety Committee, the Safety Training Section of Facilities Services, and the University Safety Office have arranged a Safety Exposition and Trade Show to be held in ballroom of Corbett Center.  A wide selection of Environmental Health and Safety Equipment will be on display.  Over forty local and regional vendors have been invited to exhibit their wares and services in the Corbett Ballroom.  

This will allow you to find out what safety equipment is available. It will provide a chance for a close look at those safety shoes, gloves, or ergonomic equipment for the lab, shop or office.  Find out if those gloves are the right type for the chemicals in your work area. A list of vendor is provided below.  The Safety Office will have a display of safety eyewear and information on prescription safety glasses that can be ordered. You can also sit in on a presentation on safety in the work place or just take a welcome break as we start into the fall semester.   

The University Safety Office and OFS Safety Training Section will provide several presentations on workplace hazards and classes on OSHA regulations, university requirements and employee protection in the laboratory, research, shop and office workplace.  The classes will be shortened versions of regular safety classes and will be presented hourly. Class attendance will be documented as formal training.  A description of classes and presentations is given below:

The trade show and classes will be open from 9 am to 4 pm.  Light refreshments will be served.  The venders will be in the 3rd floor ballroom and classes will be presented in 316 and 317.  Readers with safety questions or concerns are invited to check the Safety Office Web or call the 646-3327 for immediate assistance.

Safety Presentations

•   Employee Right to Know (Hazard Communication Standard) - This is one of the class presented on a regular basis by the Safety Office.  Information on the OSHA regulations and employee protection is provided for individuals using hazardous materials. This includes industrial and laboratory chemicals as well as many common materials such as paints, glues, or cleaners, in quantities larger than might be kept in a desk or small office.  If a department has a lab, darkroom, work area or storage with adhesives, cleaners, solvents, inks, fuels, pesticides, or other chemicals, then the individuals using the area need to keep an inventory, be trained and have access to safety information and equipment. This introductory class covers the regulations, protective measures, and basic information on hazardous materials required to comply with OSHA.  (More information)

• Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) - This presentation will give a summary of the OSHA requirements that a supervisor must follow in analyzing hazards and determining what must be provided to the employee. Discussion of type, limitations, and examples of PPE for head, hand, body and respiratory protection will be provided.   This class should be of interest to all shop, lab and field workers and supervisors that deal with solvents, sprayers, fuels, and corrosives as well as inhalant hazards.

• Office Safety & Ergonomics - This is a shortened version of a new safety class on ergonomics in the office environment.  It will provide a brief look at the science of fitting jobs to people and cover typical office symptoms of muscularskelatal disorders (MSD).  Topics include engineering adjustments involving the workstation, chairs, working height and display screens; and administrative solutions involving the nature of the jobs, task repetitive, and work schedule. Stretching exercises and local resources will be noted.  The class should be of interest to anyone using a computer in the office.

• Hazardous Waste Management - This new class provides employees with information on the disposal of NMSU's hazardous chemicals and other regulated waste.  It covers physical and health hazards of the materials, measures to protect yourself from hazards, and methods to ensure correct disposal.  Topics include waste regulations, characteristics of hazardous and regulated waste, satellite accumulation points, waste tracking forms, chemical redistribution and spills.  This class should be of interest to employee that work in areas that produce spent materials containing chemicals, blood, human body fluids or infectious agents. • Lockout/Tagout and Confined Space – This presentation provides a summary of the lockout/tagout and confine space requirements.  The lockout part is a quick review of the lockout/tagout procedures, the use of locks and tags, proper removal of lockout/ tagout devices and potential hazards in repairing energized equipment.. The confined space portion will cover general procedures to be used for working in confined spaces. It includes an overview of OSHA 1910.147, designation of confined spaces and permit required areas, NMSU confined spaces and hazards, proper entry/equipment, use of permits, and attendants duties. • Asbestos Awareness - This awareness class provides information and precautions for working in buildings or areas that contains asbestos as part of the building materials or equipment.  It will cover asbestos characteristics, health hazards, OSHA & EPA regulations,  and PPE requirements. This should be of interest to all individuals that maintenance or work in areas with asbestos-containing materials. (More information)
