Custodial Services Improves Its Operations

After more than a year of planning, Custodial Services has changed its delivery of service for the entire campus to provide cleaner facilities and better service. The changes took affect on Jan. 5. Custodial Services is also encouraging the campus community to help them "green" their operations.

One of the major changes is to the custodial working hours. Most custodians are now working from 5 a.m. to 1 p.m. and will provide daily custodial services during that time. Custodians working 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. will attend to buildings with heavy use and longer operating hours, such as the Activity Center and the health centers. In addition, custodial teams are now assigned to areas across campus for better coverage.

Ron Fisher, director for building services at the Office of Facilities and Services said the improvements make the custodians feel more like a part of NMSU and it will allow them to spend more time with their families.

"These changes are going to make our services more efficient," Fisher said. "We now have custodians on campus when people are here to not only be available if something happens, but to build better relationships with our customers."

As part of their improved services, classrooms will be visited and cleaned as required throughout the day. In addition, Custodial Services has three part-time employees on duty during the weekend for special events, projects and for light cleaning service at the Natatorium and Activity Center.

Fisher said Custodial Services will be working over the next several months to make one part of the campus "green" by using only environmentally safe products in that area. The goal is to take this initiative campuswide.
