Setting Up Your Account

You should now be at the host prompt (verdi, dante, hector, or paris, depending on which you used). Perform the following steps to prepare your account:

Note: Be sure to include all spaces and punctuation shown in each command.

1. Type chmod 711 .

   Note: You must type: chmod press space 711 press space press the period (.) key.
   This command allows your account to be accessed by the server.

2. Press enter, and type mkdir public_html

   This creates a directory that can be found by the server.

3. Press enter, and type chmod 755 public_html

   This makes this new directory readable.

The new "address" or URL of your homepage is:
http://web.nmsu.edu/~user_id/ (Remember to use your User ID.)

You have now prepared your account for creating a web page.
