Editing Your Homepage

Now that you have created your homepage, you need to know how to open up your file in Pico and make changes. In this lesson, you will learn how to

  • open a UNIX file you have created
  • make changes to that file
In order to get started, you need to make sure you are in your UNIX account. If you cannot remember how to access your UNIX account, go to Lesson 1.

  1. At the UNIX prompt, type cd public_html

  2. Press enter, and type pico index.html

  3. Press enter.

  4. The file you created in Lesson 3 opens.
  5. Now add your own personal touches to your page by adding text and HTML tags of your own.
Note: to create additional pages, or sub-pages, repeat steps 2 through 13 in lesson 3. For help on linking pages together please reference the following site.

  6. For a list of HTML resources, go to the NCSA's A Beginner's Guide to HTML page. When you are done, go on to step 5.
  7. Press Ctrl+x , to exit Pico.

  8. Press y to save your changes.

  9. Press enter.

You have now edited your homepage. View the changes you just made in Netscape. Now that you know the basics, you can customize your page by using advanced HTML tags. For a list of possible resources, go to NCSA's A Beginner's Guide to HTML site. Good luck!
