MEMBERS PRESENT: Jaime Marrujo, Eusebio Chavira, Richard Long, Katrina Doolittle, Chris Pennise, and
Katy Enriquez.
The Safety Committee was called to order at 3:40 P.M. by Richard Long
NEW BUSINESS:
1. Emergency Notification System was discussed.
a. Katy Enriquez from the Police Department briefed members on the list of departments
that have received radios for emergency notification. Katy stated that departments issued
radios should create a phone tree or other means of disseminating emergency information.
She explained that the radios are for emergency use only (weather, bomb threads, etc...)
and that they are to be left on at all times.
b. Katrina Doolittle made a motion to have each Safety Committee Member evaluate and
identify what process for emergency notification has been set up in their respective
areas. The key being dissemination of information through a complex organization. Jaime
Marrujo second the motion which passed unanimously.
c. Richard Long will draft a memorandum asking all members to do internal evaluation on
emergency notification. He will ask that all members reply to this memorandum, members are
to give method/s that will be used to notify personnel of an emergency in their area.
OLD BUSINESS:
1. Safety Tips were discussed.
a. Chevo Chavira reintroduced the idea of safety tips/information being promoted though
Page One or the Hot Line. He stated that it could be a simple reminder to use safety gear
and precaution at the work place and/or daily activity. Chevo will provide information for
review at next committee meeting.
b. Richard Long will contact Page One and Hot Line to get information regarding
distribution of information through these channels.
ANNOUNCEMENT:
a. Katrina announced that Dr. Miley Gonzales is the interim Vice Provost for Research.
b. Katrina is organizing a Biosafety Symposium on November 30, 2001 for the entire
campus and surrounding areas. Well renowned biosafety experts will be presenting
information on compliance with Center for Disease Control (CDC) and National Institutes of
Health (NIH) guidelines, risk assessment, containment, and methods to minimize risk to
biohazardous agents.
NEXT MEETING
The Safety Committee will meet Wednesday, November 14, 2001 in the New Library
Conference Room #225, from 3:30 pm - 5:00 pm.
