    Class Descriptions & Contents

    BioSafety (Lab Biosafety) Training

    Description/purpose:  

    This course provide employees with information and training on specific Biosafety –related regulatory and work practice requirements for research laboratory operations. The training session is conducted by NMSU EH&S.

    Contents:bio lab worker

    The class topics include

    • An introduction to oversight of research safety and regulatory compliance by federal agencies.
    • NMSU BioSafety Manual.
      •
    • Review of BSL-2 facility and work practice requirements.
    • A description of HEPA filters and HEPA filtration.
    • An overview of biohazard cabinetry with an emphasis on Class II BSCs.
    • Review of the proper set up, use, and shut down procedures for BSCs.
    • Spill decontamination and clean up.
    • Laboratory waste storage, decontamination, and disposal.

    Who should attend:

    While enrollment for this training is open to all NMSU faculty, staff and students this training is required for laboratory staff working at Biosafety Level II as described on an NMSU Institutional Biosafety Committee-approved application.

    Training frequency: Refresher training is not required but is recommended at three-year intervals.

    Length of course:   2 hours, + or - depending on audience size and questions

    Bloodborne Pathogen

      Description/purpose:  

    This course provide employees with information and training on precautions with dealing with blood, infectious materials and other biohazards. Employees are informed of the need and requirement to comply with state and federal regulations, as well as with University Safety program. .

    The class covers the following

    • introduction to Federal and State regulations  
    • discussion of the regulatory standard and explanation of its contents,
    • information on bloodborne diseases and their transmission,
    • NMSU model exposure control plan,
    • engineering and work practice controls,
    • personal protective equipment,
    • hepatitis B vaccine,
    • response to emergencies involving blood,
    • how to handle exposure incidents,
    • the post-exposure evaluation and
    • follow-up program, signs/labels/color-coding.  .

    Who should attend:

    All University employees, including full-time, part-time, and work study provide first aid services, work with or have the potential to contact human blood, body fluids, or tissues

    Training frequency:

    Training on the standard must be given

    • initially on assignment and
    • annually thereafter (if the potential for exposure is routine)

     Length of course:   1 1/2 to 2 hours, depending on audience size and questions

    Animal Worker Safety

      Description/purpose:  

    This course is intended for full and part-time employees (staff, faculty, grad and undergrad assistants) working with or around animals at NMSU campuses, farms, ranches, research areas and associated facilities. 

     

    Contents:

    The class covers the following

    • 1. Occupational Health and Safety Program;
    • 2. Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee;
    • 3. Potential Hazards & Physical Safety;
    • 4. Medical Health Evaluation Questionaire;
    • 5. Allergies;
    • 6. Waste Decontamination;
    • 7. Zoonoses for large animals.

    Who should attend:

    All University employees, including full-time, part-time, and work studies who work with or have the potential to contact animals, their body fluids, or tissues.  If possible, class attendees should bring their immunization record to class.

    Training frequency:

    Training on the standard must be given

    • initial upon assignment and
    • periodic reviews as needed thereafter

     Length of course:    2  to 2.5  hours depending on the duties and activities of the  employees
