    Description/purpose:

      This course provides employees with information on the OSHA's Laboratory Standard (29 CFR, 1910.1450 ), the regulations and compliance requirements.  It includes discussion, examples, and exercises on physical and health hazards of the chemicals in laboratory, measures employees can take to protect themselves from these hazards, emergency procedures, personal protective equipment, and disposal requirements for chemicals. Employees will be informed of the need and steps to comply with state and federal regulations, as well as with the NMSU Lab Safety Guide.

    • Prior attendance at recent NMSU Hazard Communication Class is required

    Contents:

    • Laboratory Standard (29 CFR, 1910.1450) requirements - including Regulations; Hazard analysis/hazard identification; Monitoring; Medical exam; PELs; Exposure symptoms; Detection methods; Lab hazards, procedures, practice; PPE; Safety equipment; Emergency actions and Recordkeeping
    • The Chemical Hygiene Plan content - including CHP location, Hygiene Responsibilities; Standard Operating Procedures; Control Measures to reduce exposure; Ventilation and Hood Performance; Prior Approval & Non-standard Operations; Particularly Hazardous Substances and Resource Material Pertaining to Laboratory Hazards (CHP model program)
    • Review of EPA's Hazardous Waste Regulations (40 CFR 261-262) and waste disposal at NMSU

    Who should attend:  All University employees, including full-time, part-time, and work study, who are assigned to a laboratory (OSHA definition of a laboratory) where hazardous or toxic chemicals are present. Previous attendance at a recent NMSU HazCom class is prerequisite

    Training frequency:  Initial upon assignment to or beginning work in a laboratory.  Additional site-specific training on specialized hazards will be provided by chemical hygiene officer or supervisor for each lab.

    Length of course: 1 1/2 - 2 hours depending on audience size and questions
