Lt. Colonel Lisa C.
Allen
Lieutenant Colonel Lisa C. Allen is the Commander, AFROTC Detachment 505, New Mexico State University, Las Cruces, New Mexico. She is responsible for recruiting, training, motivating and educating Air Force officer candidates by leading an AFROTC detachment that administers a comprehensive college-level officer training program. She has dual responsibilities as detachment commander and Professor of Aerospace studies. She determines who is accepted, trained and ultimately commissioned into the United States Air Force.
Lt. Col Allen enlisted in the Air Force in 1980 and her initial assignment was at Turkish Logistics Detachment 199, Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, as a Materiel Facilities Specialist. In 1981 she was selected for a special duty assignment as an Air Force Basic Military Training Instructor, and was assigned to the 3707th Basic Military Training Squadron at Lackland Air Force Base, Texas in March 1982. In the summer of 1984 she retrained as a Computer Programming Specialist and was assigned to the 3302 Computer Support Squadron at Randolph Air Force Base, Texas. In April 1986 she was selected for a special duty assignment to Headquarters, United States Air Force Recruiting Service at Randolph as a computer programmer. In 1986 she graduated from Texas Lutheran College with a Bachelor of Arts in Spanish. She was selected to attend Officer Training School in 1988 and was commissioned as an officer in the Air Force in January 1989. Her first assignment as an officer was to the 963rd Airborne Warning and Control Squadron at Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma, as an Air Weapons Controller. She deployed to Iceland in support of Air Defense operations guarding the sovereign airspace of the United States, and to Puerto Rico to participate in U.S. counter-drug operations. In 1991 she deployed to Saudi Arabia participating in Operation Desert Storm. In 1992 she was assigned to the 552d Operations Support Squadron as a Counter-drug Operations Action Officer, and participated in numerous deployments to Panama, Bolivia, Paraguay, and Ecuador in support of U.S. counter-drug operations. In May 1995 she was assigned to Headquarters United States Southern Command at Quarry Heights, Panama, as a Counter-drug Air Operations staff officer. She returned to Tinker Air Force base in 1997 as an Air Surveillance Officer in the 965th Airborne Air Control Squadron, where she deployed frequently in support of Operations Northern Watch, Southern Watch, and Allied Force. In June 2000 she was assigned to the Information Operations Programming and Technology Division, Headquarters United States Air Force, Washington, D.C. as the Air Force Tactical Deception program manager. She returned to Tinker Air Force Base in June 2003 as a Mission Crew Commander and Flight Commander in the 552d Operations Support Squadron. She supported numerous Homeland Security missions as a mission planner and aircrew member, and deployed in support of the U.S. Secret Service to provide air security during a tri-national presidential summit in Mexico in April 2006.
Lt. Col Allen’s awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Aerial Achievement Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Air Force Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters, Joint Service Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Achievement Medal with one oak leaf cluster, Air Force Combat Readiness Medal, Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal with one device, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with one device, Kosovo Campaign Medal with one device, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal with one device, and the Kuwait Liberation Medal (Government of Kuwait).
CAPTAIN TRASTINE L.
SAXBY
Captain Trastine Saxby is an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies at New Mexico State University, AFROTC Detachment 505. She currently serves as the Unit Admissions Officer and Commandant of Cadets. Capt Saxby is also the advisor of Arnold Air Society.
She graduated from The University of North Carolina at Charlotte in 1999 with a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work and was commissioned as a Personnel officer that same year. Captain Saxby has experience in several arenas including Squadron Section Commander for the 1st Civil Engineer Squadron at Langley Air Force Base, the 1st Operation Support Squadron also at Langley Air Force Base, and the Air Force’s largest Communication Squadron, the 374th Communication Squadron at Yokota Air Base Japan. She also had a temporary assignment as a Project Officer for the 1st Fighter Wing Headquarters at Langley AFB. Prior to coming to DET 505, Capt Saxby served as the Chief of Personal Readiness, Assignments, Separations and Retirements while assigned to the Military Personnel Flight (MPF) at Yokota Air Base Japan.
Capt Saxby’s awards include the Achievement Medal and a Commendation Medal for her 5 years of service and she was also recognized as Yokota Air Base’s Personnel Manager of the Year for 2004 and the MPF’s Company Grade Officer of the Quarter in 2004.
CAPTAIN DONIN R. HELMICK
Captain Captain Helmick is an Assistant Professor of Aerospace Studies at New Mexico State University, AFROTC Detachment 505. He teaches the Freshman (AS100) and Sophomore (AS200) classes and is also the Unit Admissions Officer. Capt Helmick is also the Blue Knights Honor Guard advisor.
Captain Helmick originally entered the Air Force as an Airman Basic in November 1988. Upon successful completion of Basic Training and Personnel Technical Training, he was initially assigned to the HQ Air Reserve Personnel Center at Lowry AFB CO. In 1992 he was selected for his second special duty assignment as the NCOIC of Personnel at AFROTC Det 105, University of Colorado-Boulder. Captain Helmick was selected for the AFROTC POC Early Release Program, entered AFROTC as a cadet in Jan 1999, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in Dec 2000. He returned to active duty in February 2001 as the AFROTC Northwest Region’s Assistant Operations Officer. In May 2004, Capt Helmick was assigned to Holloman AFB NM as the Squadron Section Commander of the 49th Logistics Readiness Squadron. In March 2006 he moved over to be the Squadron Section Commander of the 49th Maintenance Squadron.From August 2007 to December 2007, Captain Helmick was deployed to Al Udeid AB Qatar in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM, Operation ENDURING FREEDOM, and the Combined Joint Task Force HORN OF AFRICA as the 379th Air Expeditionary Wing’s Section Commander. Upon his return he was selected for AFROTC Assistant Professor of Aerospace duty and began working at AFROTC Det 505 in Jan 2008.
