OPPORTUNITIES FOR STUDENTS AT CITIZEN SCHOOLS

Here is an opportunity that students at New Mexico State University
might
be interested in. A representative that works for Citizen Schools which
is a non-profit that runs after school programs in urban middle schools
around the country will be coming to NMSU. They use an experiential
learning model that integrates volunteers and the community in holistic,
hands-on learning.

They are seeking students of all majors and interests for a few
different
positions and they thought students involved in the AIP program might
be a
good fit because the program provides the opportunity to work with
diverse populations in a creative way while building relationships in
the community and working to improve urban schools.

They are new to New Mexico as of last year and have two sites open in
Albuquerque and hope to open a new site this fall in Santa Fe. They
will
be in Las Cruces on Tuesday April 22nd and a representative love to set
up
a meeting with you to explain more about their opportunities. They will
be
available at 2:30 PM and 3:30 PM.

They have included a brief description of opportunities below as well as
the link to their website to give you a better idea of the positions
that
are available for NMSU students. They offer a two year Teaching
Fellowship, a part time job working as a Team Leader running an after
school program and finally an opportunity to volunteer as a Citizen
Teacher twice a week for a semester.

Educating Youth. Strengthening Communities

National Teaching Fellowship - the teaching fellowship is a unique,
competitive, two-year professional and leadership development program
open to students in all disciplines. Fellows engage in a diverse range
of experiences and hands-on learning opportunities with other young
adults of varied backgrounds who have the potential to become strong
educators and community builders. The Fellowship includes service as a
Team Leader in a Citizen Schools after school program, professional
development in partnership with a community organization, and the
opportunity to enroll in a pioneering Master's in Education program with
a specialization in out-of-school time learning.

Teaching Fellows leave our program with dynamic written and verbal
communication skills, the ability to engage students and adults in
powerful programs, enhanced professional skills, and a resume that
underscores their emergence as new leaders in education reform as well
as in youth and community development.

Team Leader - Team Leaders lead a team of 8-12 middle school students
during out-of-school time, supporting academic achievement and
facilitating hands-on learning activities led by community volunteers.
In addition to building relationships with students' families and
community members, Team Leaders provide individualized and group
academic coaching, teach and support learning projects, design and
implement leadership and teambuilding activities, lead field trips, and
provide hands-on learning experiences that culminate in high-quality
student performances and that promote leadership skills.

Citizen Teacher - Apprenticeships are taught by Citizen
Teachers-volunteers from the community who strive to share their skills,
hobbies and interests with young people. Becoming a Citizen Teacher
involves a commitment of 13 weeks plus three hours of training. Citizen
Teachers teach their apprenticeship one/two afternoons each week over a
school semester, from around 3:30 to 5:00 pm, on either Mondays,
Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays.
