Mr. Freddy Marquez Community educational development in Chicano communities

Areas of Interest:
Community educational development in Chicano communities. Accessibility, recruitment and graduation barriers affecting Chicanos. Self help-grass root initiatives for social, economic, and political improvement of Chicanos and their communities.

Background:
Previous experience includes twenty years teaching Sociology. Social initiatives include collaboration with grassroots, economic, political and education entities to improve the socio-economic status in Chicano communities.


Academic Profile:
My current position consists of coordinating recruitment and retention of Chicano student participating in the Enlace Program at the university. I teach the Exito! course, designed for first generation Latino students. In addition to learning skills to be successful in college, emphasis is placed on Chicano identity as it relates to the University culture and campus climate.

Teaching:
My teaching philosophy is based on raising student’s consciousness through problem posing, problem solving and critical thinking. Critiquing and synthesizing sociological theoretical perspectives such as assimilation, internal-colonial, and radical thought are part of the course. Alternative Chicano sociological perspectives will be addressed as well.
