Undergraduate Minor in Drug Studies
Overview and Requirements
The Drug Studies Minor enables students to develop a critical perspective on humankind’s diverse relationships with drugs from historical and global perspectives. A variety of courses currently offered in different departments at NMSU provide students a broad and diverse overview of drug uses and abuses, drug control policies, and opportunities for fieldwork and internships in agencies and organizations in the drug treatment or enforcement fields. Students complete the Drug Studies Minor by taking one required course and an additional 15 credits, 9 of which must be upper division. No more than 9 credits may be earned in any one department and no more than 6 credits may be taken on a pass/fail basis. If the class is graded, students must earn a C or higher. Students may not earn more than 6 credits total in independent studies or special readings courses and must receive approval from the minor advisor to count these credits.

- HEALTH SCIENCES 484 - Alcohol and Drug Prevention and Control
- GOVERNMENT 420 - Special Topics in Public Policy: Drug Policy
- GOVERNMENT 422 - Border Security Policy
- PSYCHOLOGY 303 – Community Psychology
- PSYCHOLOGY 325 - Health Psychology
- INDEPENDENT STUDIES or PRACTICUM COURSES as appropriate (see note below)
Note: Independent studies, practicum, fieldwork, or internship courses in a variety of disciplines may be approved for the Drug Studies Minor if these courses involve students in learning principally about drugs. Additional courses may be approved for the minor in consultation with the minor advisor. To qualify 1/3 of the course content must be about drugs.
