Recent Anthropology Faculty Honors and Accomplishments
- Drs. Monte McCrossin and Bill Walker have been awarded sabbatical leaves for the Fall 2012. Dr. McCrossin will visit a number of prominent museums in the U.S. to examine their collections for his ongoing research on primate evolution and his new interest in Native American cradle boards. Dr. Walker will use his sabbatical to work on a manuscript about ritual in prehistory.
- Dr. Don Pepion joined religious leaders and elders from indigenous communities around the world to perform traditional events at the Jubilee celebration of Queen Elizabeth II. Dr. Pepion and other Plains Indian leaders rode horses in traditional regalia for the celebration and enjoyed tea with the Queen at Windsor Castle.

- Drs. Fumi Arakawa and Dr. Mary Alice Scott received mini-grants from the NMSU College of Arts and Sciences to support their summer research (2012)
- Dr. Lois Stanford was elected to the Executive Board of the Society for Applied Anthropology (Spring 2012)
- Dr. Miriam Chaiken received the first annual College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Department Head award (Spring 2012)
- Congratulations to Dr. Don Pepion who has been promoted to Full College Professor (Spring 2012)
- Dr. Miriam Chaiken received a university Distinguished Achievement Professor Award (Spring 2012)
- Dr. Rani Alexander received a College of Arts and Sciences travel award to attend the Spring 2012 Society for American Archaeology meetings
- Dr. Lois Stanford received the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Service Award for 2011
- Dr. Bill Walker received a College of Arts and Sciences travel award to participate in a research symposium in England (May 2012)
- Emeritus faculty member Dr. Wenda Trevathan received the 2011 WW Howells Award for her latest book Ancient Bodies, Modern Lives: How Evolution Has Shaped Women's Health (Oxford University Press) at the American Anthropological Association meetings in Montreal.
- Dr. Don Pepion has been recognized for his research on Native American Student success (Fall 2011)
