How to Apply to the Sociology Graduate Program

Note: When applying to the sociology program, you will need to submit TWO applications-- one to the Sociology program and one to the NMSU Graduate School. Below are the specifications for each application. 

Applying to the NMSU Graduate School

Obtain an application from the graduate school. Send the following to the Graduate School:

  • Graduate School application
  • $30 (non-refundable)
  • One copy of official transcripts of ALL undergraduate and graduate work

Applying to the Sociology Program

To apply to the Sociology Master's Program, you will need to submit the following:


  • 3 Letters of Reference from persons familiar with your academic record (download form below)
  • Department Application (download form below)
  • Statement of Intent addressing your interests and graduate school objectives

Note: When applying to the ONLINE Master's program, please electronically submit the materials that the department requests. E-mail these materials to the Online Graduate Advisor, Dr. Patricia Hoffman (phoffman@nmsu.edu).

Financial Assistance

Teaching/research assistantships:

Students may apply for up to 20 hours (per week) of funding for teaching/research assistantships. Most assistantships are half time (10 hours per week) and include a waiver for out-of-state tuition. Assistantships can be held for a maximum of two years. To apply, check mark the appropriate box on the departmental application form and return to the department by the admission deadline.

Funding decisions will be based on

  • previous academic record
  • the letters of reference
  • and the personal statement of professional interests, experience and graduate study objectives.


    Graduate School opportunities for financial assistance: 


      The Financial Aid office also provides financial assistance for some students.  

      Deadlines

      On-campus: 

      If the student is applying for an assistantship, applications are due February 15th for the following Fall semester and October 15th for the following Spring semester. Admissions are rolling for students who are not applying for assistantships.

      Online: 

      Applications for the online program are as follows:

      • March 1st for Summer semesters
      • May 1st for Fall semesters
      • November 1st for Spring semesters
