This exhibition brought together folk art objects collected by designer Alexander Girard (1907-1993) and examples of his Modern furniture, textiles, and films for the Herman Miller Company to explore the intersections of handcraft and machine production, mid-century modernist esthetics and folk art. Funding was provided by the NEA and NM Arts. The Gallery was presented an award for Outstanding Exhibition and Catalogue for this exhibition at the annual meeting of the Southeastern College Art Conference in November, 2011.

Unmute: Text and Image in American Art 1970 - 2000
Drawing on the NMSU Permanent Collection's strength in modern works on paper, this exhibition addresses the ways in which images and texts operated in post-Minimalist late twentieth century art. Some of the works reinforce the distinction between image and text, some work to elide it; some of the works are hybrids, and we can read them as texts or as images as they contest their shared ground. Echoes of the paragone of poetry and painting are evident, as is the artists' use of text to regain conceptual control from critics and the art market.

January 22, 2010 – February 26, 2010

Roldan, who represents his native Colombia at this year's Venice Biennale, uses minimal means to create lively screens and tapestries of torn cloth strips that produce effects ranging from graffiti and hieroglyphic texts, to metal shavings responding to the pull of a magnet.
