The university gallery’s docent program has been in existence for sixteen years. With the upcoming school year right around the corner, the gallery is interested in reenergizing both the docent program as well as the volunteer program. With about 500 children from grade school through high school and other groups touring the gallery each semester, 20 to 30 docents/volunteers are needed for the fall/spring semester.
The traditional role of the docent/volunteer is to guide people through a gallery, but not lecture to them. Instead, docents pose questions that help visitors learn and respond to art.
To be docents, volunteers need not be art experts. Previous experience as a docent is not necessary because an individual’s own interests, travels, work and desires makes everyone’s contribution as a docent a unique one. The program will provide many opportunities to learn about art, and docents will be trained and briefed about upcoming exhibitions on a regular basis. Docents are especially being sought for the daytime on weekdays, and there is a need for volunteers during some evening and weekend hours.
